Has someone ever noted how AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION is always 2nd download (most popular and “known”) while AVAST is 5TH (less “known”…!!!) and AVIRA ANTIVIR PERSONAL EDITION CLASSIC is now 15 TH in the top download list at www.download.com. Is there a way to publicize AVAST to change that state of facts… CNET Download Dispatch: Super Sunday‏

After weeks of hype, Super Bowl Sunday is finally here. Whether you’re pulling for Tom Brady and Co. or the G men from New York, this super collection of pigskin paydirt will have you ready for the big game.

There’s movement in this week’s Top Ten list once again, with Ad-Aware and AVG Anti-Virus switching the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively. In the Top Movers section, versatile app Easy CD-DA Extractor jumps seven spots to crack to top 50 at No. 43.

This week on Crossfade TV, the Download Music crew listens to new songs from Brooklyn duo MGMT, hip-hop star Fat Joe, and singer-songwriter Josh Ritter. Our Game of the Week is “Conquer Online,” a free MMORPG that weaves adventures around an ancient tale of mystical Kung Fu.

I think an easy answer would be many download directly from avast.com. avast also gets 5 Stars at download.com and there is a reference to download.com on the avast home page.

There is also a link to download from download.com for the avast Home, English version on the avast download page, so avast is directing traffic there to download, but many would rather download from the source.

So I don’t know what more Alwil could do, short of stopping people downloading the English version of avast home from the avast web site and that would probably ps off.

AVG ANTIVIRUS FREE EDITION is always 2nd download (most popular and "known") while AVAST is 5TH (less "known"...!!!)
It happens to be a fact. AVG is more popular. Some of us just know that avast! is better. :)

If you don’t like the way CNET Download.com treats avast!, you can always go here
scroll down to the Highly Recommended FREE Software section.
You’ll always find avast! as the featured free Anti virus program. ;D

In one thread in avast! forums Vlk did say ALWIL sometimes pays to get avast! higher up in the download lists. Probably for avast! Professional.

Well, those numbers don’t mean much really. I personally always prefer to download from developers page because i’ll always get the very latest version and servers are usually far faster than download.com can offer me.
So actual realistic number would be counting downloads from each vendor and measure that. When i recommend avast!, i don’t send ppl to download.com but to www.avast.com instead… make sense doesn’t it?

Actually sometimes third party sites have the newest versions before developer sites. Not always, just sometimes.

As someone else mentioned above, download dot com can be payed and perhaps AVG pays each month to keep it near the top. As such, those ratings on that site mean very little.

Here is an example (bold is my emphasis):
