Yesterday I was hit with one of those “Security Warning-Call Now” or some such thing, scams. I used task manager to shut down Edge (4 times, as 4 browser sessions were opened). This has happened before, so I opened a new browser and went back to what I was doing. Later, I came back and found that I couldn’t change my zoom display and my desktop icons were not only larger but also rearranged. I went to the recovery option and the system restore point wasn’t what I wanted, but the option to initiate was highlighted and available. I’ve never created a system restore point so I went to search for how to do one and after a second thought, I decided just to use the available one. However, when I went back to the option to begin system restore was no longer highlighted and or available when I clicked the command.
For some odd reason the zoom display % option started working again and since I actually liked the larger icons on the taskbar, I chalked up the experience to another WTF mystery and quit worrying about the why temporarily. I’m in the camp that shuts down his computer at night and when I restarted it this morning, everything was back to how it had been before the attack. I’m old but still intellectually curious, so I’m now trying to figure out if I have evil gremlins at play on my computer that Avast can’t pick-up. I’ve run two quick scans and a full scan but other than a listing of some files in sandbox that weren’t scanned, nothing else turned up.
I reviewed your logs and everything looks fine with your system.
You may want to change your default browser to Chrome or FireFox as they are protected by Avast BHO extensions and are easier to clean / reset should anything unforeseen happen (a search redirect, for example).
You may also want to check you Ease of Access settings to see if there are any “hot keys” that over ride the zoom controls.
Thank you for your time and assistance. Thanks for the advice. I’m in a tight spot with changing browsers. So far, the only browser that gives me the clearest picture-crispness and contrast is IE/Edge. I need glasses for distance and now I need glasses to use the computer and when I read a book I have to take my glasses off. So, anything that is dull or fuzzy distracts me from focusing on the task at hand. However, if you have any thoughts how I can achieve this with these browsers I’m open to trying your suggestions.
There is nothing wrong with IE/Edge; use them if that suits your needs. I was only pointing out that Edge is new and a little bit difficult to reset should anything happen to it.
As I said your logs are clean. You can delete FRST and the logs it made. Come back anytime you need help; we’re here for you.
