Com1 error

I am using a dsl connection but still have my dial-up modem installed just in case. Last time I reinstalled windows xp and tried to install the modem it was installed just fine but the dialup conn. does not recognize it ???
how can I fix this?

Did you try to create a ‘new’ dial-up connection?

Try Tech’s suggestion first.

Your modem is a D-Link DFM-562E external serial, on COM1?

If Yes, I have seen similar problems with XP.
Unlike earlier Windows versions, XP treats all serial devices as if they are removable. So after install, a serial modem must always be switched on when you start the PC, otherwise XP will not “load” the drivers and the modem will be unavailable for dial-up connections. Normally, re-starting the PC with the modem powered-up will fix the problem but sometimes something gets corrupted and a “repair install” of Windows (with the modem switched on of course) is needed.

Do you mean a complete overinstallation of Windows just to detect this hardware? ???

P.S. Did not receive your email yet…

Unfortunately Yes.
The first time it happened a very helpful Microsoft rep. spent a total of about 2 hours on the phone (phoned me back 3 times!) suggesting other “quicker” ways to resolve it before eventually resorting to an, as they call it, “in-place install” from the CD, which did the trick. I’ve since changed to a PCI modem on that machine just in case.
That’s not to say that Minacross’s problem is identical but the “Modem Removed” message is the same.

P.S. I sent you a PM with a link.

Wow… terribly sorry. Thanks for the info.

Downloading and testing… seems fantastic to be able to test KAV engine 8)
