Does anyone know if it’s safe to install just the firewall from Comodo Internet Security if I have Avast Professional 4.8? I don’t want them to conflict of course. Thanks for any input!

Hi Kanmi,
As long as you only install the firewall element of CIS, you should be okay.
From my experience with Comodo however, I wouldn’t recommend it.
It is a complicated program that can be difficult to set up correctly.

Ok, that’s good. Is there a different firewall you would recommend?

As you can see I use Online Armor but some people have had some trouble with this program,
Maybe this could help you to decide
There are many freeware firewalls such as, Comodo (care required now it is a suite not to install the anti-virus element), PCTools Firewall Plus, etc. - Zone Alarm free works fine with avast and has a reasonably friendly user interface, however, the free version is becoming bloated with trial ware and is also crippled as far as outbound protection goes In the Program Control, configuration area, the slider will only goes as far as Medium protection, if you want more you have to buy the Pro version.
See A Forum discussion on free firewalls http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=30808.0
See http://www.matousec.com/projects/firewall-challenge/results.php .
Many forum users are using all of the above:
PC Tools Firewall seems to have the least user headaches as it doesn’t seem to be constantly asking the user questions about this and that.
I think you can see by my comments on Zone Alarm free you have to be careful that you are not using the pro trial version.
Online Armor for the most parts fine but it has caused some users grief after avast program updates and that is something you have to watch out for.
Comodo is now a suite and you have to do a custom install so as not to install the antivirus element, of all the firewalls listed this seems to be the noisiest in asking questions, depending on settings and elements used, so it could be daunting for those not to familiar with firewalls or their systems.

Hmm, well to save myself possible trouble I think I will spend some time customizing the Comodo firewall. Thanks so much.
in the configuration wizard chose “Firewall security” option to install only the firewall. Dont chose internet security because it will install the antivirus

They both are fine but i think avast plays well with http://www.pctools.com/firewall/ . It is very quiet and decent

I am using Outpost 2009 Free 6.5 (http://free.agnitum.com/ ). It was able to prevent leaks from the PCFlank Leaktest. I switched from Comodo because I was unable to get it to pass this test. Outpost was also able to pass the keylogger test from http://www.zemana.com/SecurityTests.aspx which Comodo failed. Also, Outpost works great with avast!

I find Outpost and PC Tools very easy to use. But compared to Online Armor and Comodo they are hard.
