compatibility conflict Zonealarm Pro 10 and Avast 6

Hello,
Trying to update existing zonealarm pro on one of my computers I get a message that there is a conflict between ZA and Avast and ZA cannot install. What gives? Is there a way to install anyway?

welcome to the forum.

what is the conflict we need more information then that any screen?, the sandbox pooping up or?

Zonealarm pops up a screen saying that because Avast is installed on the computer Zonealarm cannot be installed. The previous version is 9, and it runs without a problem next to Avast. I am not writing from that computer so I cannot post a screen shot, but that is basically the message I get. There is no message from Avast.

Not sure if zone alarm contains an av componant ? if it does can you do a custom install and choose only the firewall otherwise you might have to install ZA first then avast.

Looks like ZA thinks they are incompatible. I can think of a couple options.

1: Take it up with ZA, since they are the ones who think its a problem, or,
2: Remove both Avast! and ZA. Install ZA first, then Avast! second.

I guess I’m wondering if I will be able to reinstall Avast if I do that, or be totally unprotected against virii.
(I use the firewall only version of Zonealarm).
And yes I am also trying to work it out from the ZA side. But so far there does not appear to be a solution.
For now I am sticking to the older version of ZA, which works OK with Avast installed.

Hi Everyone

I have same conflicts. My suystem actualy is:

Notebook IBM Thinkpad with Windows XP SP3 MS updated with last fixes, AVAST antivirus 6.0.1203 and ZoneAlarm Firewall PRO 9.

I was trying to install/update my ZoneAlarm Firewall to the new version 10.0.250 and then the installation stopped with this message:

ZONE ALARM CANNOT BE INSTALLED ON A SYSTEM ALREADY HAS AVAST ANTIVIRUS INSTALLED.
YOUR SYSTEM DOESN´T MEET THE INSTALLATION REQUIREMENT.

You could try what I mentioned, removing both and installing ZA first, then Avast!. Or using older ZA version.

Apart from that, you seem to have to choose one or the other. Sad.

I suspect that when I install zonealarm with Avast gone it will not allow me to reinstall Avast (that would be the situation I’d get if I followed your suggestion). That would create the unacceptable situation that I could be open to viruses. So I guess I’m opting not to update zonealarm to the new version. Not so much sad as stupid. The irritating thing is that while Avast is free (and I find it one of the better packages available) my Zonealarm is a paid-for subscription. I have renewed only a few weeks ago. Hopefully they will work out this incompatibility and I will be able to update to a better version soon.
Anyhow thanks for your suggestion, even if I cannot really implement it.

I have a question:

I know its probably not recommended - but for the sake of testing - did you try disabling all the avast! shields (assuming you are only using the free version) before installing ZA?

Just wondering if that will help because sometimes firewall software and the like recommend disabling AV software before installing.

I have had the same problem. I use ZA Pro. Had a terrible experience with ZA online chat about it. [The support person basically sounded like he didn’t know anything about it, but if that’s the message I received I should just uninstall Avast! 6.0. When I asked to be connected to a supervisor who might know more about it I was disconnected!]

I haven’t yet tried uninstalling the Avast! to install ZA 10, but that is my next step. I was, however, surprised at how little there seems to be on the web about this problem and its solution, given the large base of people who are likely using both ZA and Avast!

Have you tired disabling all the shields?

Have you tried actually killing the avast processes after disabling all shields? To do this you need to go into “Troubleshooting” and untick the “self-defence module” (otherwise you won’t be allowed to stop/kill the avast! processes in task manager and via the services.msc program.

The second step will ensure avast! is definitely not running at the time you want to install ZA.

:diamonds: That is no guarantee as the low level drivers of avast (required in a resident AV solution) will still be running even if you disable the shields and processes in task manager (after disabling the self-defence module). :diamonds:

I honestly haven’t a clue about what modules are contained in ZA Pro version 10 ?

Some time ago there used to be a compatibility issue with ZAP where its Privacy function screwed with the avast web shield, now I have no idea if this feature is still present and if this is what is getting in the way. There was also one with the tracking.log file, more on that if required (e.g. experiencing that problem), but that whilst it could be a problem in older ZA versions. Even if still present in the current ZA versions, that in itself shouldn’t stop it from being installed.

Whilst I’m no fan of ZA, each to his own. What we need is a definitive answer from Zone Alarm about this compatibility and exactly why it can’t be installed. If we knew the reason, then perhaps someone could come up with a work around.

But in playing their cards this close to their chest by not divulging why it can’t be installed, if I were using ZA I wouldn’t be happy at their secretiveness, to the point of abandoning it and asking for my money back. There are plenty of free firewalls as good as or better than ZA Pro that have absolutely no problem in working with avast, so me I would be reversing their suggestion to uninstall avast and instead uninstall ZA.

So As has been suggested you could try uninstalling avast and reboot, try to install ZAP10, reboot and then install avast! and see if ZAP10 has a whinge about that.

In my original post, I had neglected to specifically state all the steps I had already taken. I had already killed all the shields, and went as far as to disable all services related to Avast! The last step remaining was to uninstall it, which I did tonight. After the uninstall and a reboot, the ZAP Pro upgrade took two more reboots before stabilizing. Then I reinstalled Avast! 6.0.1203 and rebooted one more time for good measure! Though it may be too soon to call the operation a success, at least for the moment Avast! and ZAP seem to be playing well together. I suspect the uninstall/reinstall was necessary because it seems like there is no way to disable Avast! completely, and the portion that stays in memory (despite all my attempts to kill shields and close services) somehow interferes with the ZAP installation.

None of which explains the ZAP installer’s cryptic message, which could have stated, “Avast! Antivirus is incompatible with the ZAP installer. Please uninstall Avast! before attempting installation of ZAP, then reinstall Avast!” Or, if the two applications are truly incompatible (which I may discover in the next day or so ::slight_smile: ), a message to that effect would have been appropriate. Bottom line: someone at Checkpoint obviously knows there is an incompatibility at some level (hence the cryptic message several of us received), but chose to articulate it in a way that was not at all helpful. I have made my dissatisfaction known to Checkpoint customer service and, depending on the response I receive I’ll decide whether I will continue to use the new ZAP10.

In the meantime, if I experience further difficulty, I’ll post back here.

Yes it still begs the question why ZA refuses to install and why the big secret why ZA can’t be installed when avast has virtually zero problem/warning when another firewall is installed.

If they know it isn’t compatible then what’s the problem in divulging what that compatibility is unless it is on the ZA side. As you say it does nothing for customer confidence when they won’t tell you why the warning is given and what the compatibility issue is, so that it can be worked out.

It really does make me wonder if this isn’t an underhand ploy to sell their ZA Suite, etc. with AV.

Fingers crossed that you have crossed that bridge now and all will be fine.
