Complaint...

Theres 3 reasons why i have used avast for the past 4 years:

Its good.
Its free.
It doesn’t use adware or scare tactics to get people to give them more money.

It seems i can cross that third one off the list. Earlier while watching a movie(through netflix, fullscreened) i had an avast window pop up. It told me “Your licence is about to expire! Upgrade now to pro!” or something like that, along with a huge image showing 3 features pro has over free(none of which i care about so the advertisements a waste of my time)
I decided to check my free licence, it expires in march next year…

Did a button get pressed, i “never” want to see an advertisement like this again.

I’m guessing the SILENT\GAMING mode button in the main GUI would have prevented this.

Guess i should point out i’m using 4.8 because a few months back the v5 installer failed.

It is all about 4.8 support being likely to cease at the end of this year, so there is a push to get people on to avast 5.0. You don’t have to buy the Pro or AIS, there is also a link to continue using avast 5.0 free.

I would suggest trying the avast5 installation again, perhaps a clean install:

  • Download the latest version of avast, 5.0.677 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free_eng.exe (English only) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for both 4.8 and 5.0).

    1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 4.8 if previously installed and then for 5.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

Except the popup was “Just” about upgrading to pro, not about the version being old or anything. There were 2 things to click, Upgrade to Pro or compare more features.
It wasn’t like the little alerts you get if you click something in the GUI only available to pro.
Would’t drive me nuts so much if it was simply “Your version is outdated, download the latest now.”

There is still in the pop-up a means of getting the free version, certainly in the images of the pop-up I have seen in the forums.

So you could simply try to ignore it, but it won’t go away; the inevitable is going to happen support for 4.8 will cease; just install avast 5.0 free.

Agreed. It is telling you that development for version 4.8 is going to end. You don’t have to buy the paid version; it is merely offering you a discount if you choose to do so.

Feel free to keep using the free version if you wish to
