Hello
I have / had a windows 7 professional HP desktop PC and the other day Avast stopped working (again) but this time is because something bad happened and my wireless keyboard wouldn’t work, it was something to do with a faulty disk and the screen said ‘one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency’ but then said cannot open volume for direct access. I tried things like updating the drive or disabling and then enabling but nothing worked. Now though when ever I turn on the PC, it goes to a screen that asks me to either repair windows or open windows normally, and whatever I chose it goes to the repair part. so when I try to repair the drive, it takes about three hours and then just turns off, It wont let me do any other option like repair windows or reinstall windows. I literally cant get anywhere with it
Any ideas please?
First thing to do is running the tool from the drive manufacturer to check the drive.
It can be broken.
If it says that the drive is ok, format and perform a clean installation of Windows.
sorry, how do I ‘run the tool from the drive manufacturer’?
Do have files you wish to keep? Save those files first if you do. Next, HP model number would help us help you.
Download the tool and follow the instructions that the manufacturer is giving you.
sorry for the slow response. I cant download anything or save any files because when I turn the PC on, it doesn’t go anywhere apart from a black screen saying ‘windows failed to start’ and then asking if I want to ‘launch start up repair’ or ‘start windows normally’
and repair doesn’t do anything as a pop up appears saying ’ an error occurred. process stopped’

You need to realize that nothing lasts forever. Hardware fails.
How old is this computer ??? Do you have an image backup ???
its about 3 yrs old - HP DC7900 SFF Core 2 Duo E7500 4GB 320GB , luckily ive saved all photo’s/ videos but now I realise I need to get some info from ‘my documents’ otherwise my little daughter has lost all her sims data
A regular image backup routine is always best.
Usually realized after a disaster happens.

hey Bob, if I were to find some kind of image, what do I do with it?
There is no image since you didn’t created one.
Use a live cd/dvd or bootable USB and see if you can retrieve data from the drive.
thanks Eddy, do I just buy a bootable usb and put it in the pc and see what happens?
No need to buy anything, just use a USB stick and create one yourself.
