I’ve found that version 6 is a disaster on my system – I originally did the “program” upgrade (in-place automatic) and my entire system became unstable; couldn’t run anything, no IP traffic in or out, nothing would work. Had to bounce the system and remove it in safe mode.
Ran the sweep/remover progra ???m (to make sure nothing was remaining) and then I downloaded the full installer, same result – had to remove it again in safe mode.
The system’s XP SP3, pretty standard fare – running Zonealarm 9.2.057.000 as well.
Anyone else seen this at all? 6.0 for me is an unmitigated disaster so far…
I’ve had no issues at all on either of my XP’s but I’ve found, it takes a couple of reboots after installation to get everything set straight (drivers etc.) :-\ I’ve never used ZA but I have read many posts here in the forums of conflict with Avast??
I was suspecting that, particularly given the lack of any IP traffic getting through and the propensity of Zonelabs to update their product at a similar rate to Avast (makes integration testing exceptionally difficult as it’s such a moving target).
I’m reliant on ZA for proper outbound control, one of the things I really like about it; not really wanting to move away from their stuff.
For the time being I’ve reverted to 5.0.677 but I presume that is only a temporary solution; I’m just surprised that 6.0 had so many problems, I’ve always found Avast updates to be pretty pain free (at least in my experience). This makes me wonder if I have a single point of failure, perhaps we’ll see more feedback with others using the ZA/Avast combination?
I have heard that Zone Alarm is a disaster with Avast. I read several issues where always on security shields from other software and third-party firewalls cause issues. I’ll bet this happened with the version 6 update in your case.
It’s best to uninstall any other competing protection shields that are always on before installing Avast. (And any other competing AV programs as well.) I use Avast, (still on 5.1) and Malware Bytes, but I only run Malware Bytes On-Demand.
I would uninstall Zone Alarm, using the built-in Windows Firewall in its place. Than, uninstall any other competing always on security programs or other AV on the system. Than, uninstall Avast 6, Get the Avast clean-up utility, and reinstall Avast 6.
I have three computers all with Zonealarm on it. Two computers works well with version 6, just one crashed. Back to Avast 5 and the system is running again (deinstall Avast 6 in safe mode). The computer with the problem have XP Pro on it, the rest XP.
So I don’t think it is Zonealarm. I am using it for years now with avast.
I use Avast! free for AV, Anti-spyware, and anti-rootkit, and Comodo Firewall for Firewall, anti-spyware (I can’t deactivate it, comes with D+), host/executable security monitor (Defense+ or D+), Security sandboxing (unknown executables), this is my winning combo and won’t change it for the world. I have the latest Comodo Firewall suit and upgraded to Avast! 6 without any problems on Win7 64-bit Ulti.
