a couple of days ago my computer suddenly needed a restart (avast 4 home version being the request signal), so i did that after which i couldn’t log on back to the user interface (winXPpro user).
it simply notified me of a certain error from which my memory was referenced at some two points:
0x006003b3 (click ok to cancel or cancel to debug activity)
0x005f03b3 (same message)
i said to myself ok then lets just format the HD, and it worked i got my comp back on track, but only for a while, after which i again got the same message and i then formated again (dunno know how smart that was but ok), after the second format did a boot disk scan from avast where he couldnt find anything, and did another complete thourough scan (including archive scan), which again found nothing. now my problem again apperared, did the same thind again only with the added scan of avast virus remover (the one downloadable). after the last format i couldn’t get even past the point where OS starts, and couldnt format and install windows again.
now my questions are the following:
could i have a virus on my second partition (c: was formated in a total of 4 times/ d: never)
could the virus be on my motherboard (i know it sounds ridiculous but still)
how come avast didn’t detect it
p.s. why am i sure its a virus, well i checked all my components i could (ram, disks/via trying a different one) and i managed to start UBUNTU linux from the CD and even used the data on my disks as much as i could possibly via the CD.
I already gave my comp into repeair so this is purely information seeking,
many thanks in advance
can you remember what avast said when it requested a restart?
was it a program update of avast?
was it stating it needed a restart to remove a virus?
reason i ask is after a format of your c partition (aslong as you dont touch the other drives) any software virus or otherwise should be gone, once you start running programs from the other drive you didnt format its possible to reinfect from the same file.
Random memory errors, Blue screens, are common for failing but not completly dead ram, cpu and psu. if you buy branded ram and dont over clock its usualy the psu on its way out. a failing psu would also frequently cause unexplained system slow down and freezes, 1-2 seconds of slow down of screen freeze without any strain on the pc (nothing taxing running at the time).
so as far as a virus being the cause, i would say it depends what avast requested the restart for.
PSU = Power Supply Unit, these range from £20-several hundred, most modern systems require 500+watts.
sorry i cant be much more help, but hope you find something usefull amongst that.
If you find the perfect piece of software just let us know…

But memory problems could be conflicts and not virus…
After i put my comp in for repair everything worked out great, though the only thing they did was a simple reformat of my whole disk. To answer the question is it a virus or complication, i would say virus still, because my roommate had the exact same problem and eventually fixed his comp only via formating his disk like i did (not only the windows partition but the WHOLE one).
Would still like to thank for the replies. Hope this helps anyone maybe:D
