Computer Freezes at and during Start Up

So I am encountering a problem the last few days. My HP laptop has been freezing during the start up at the log-in screen and as also froze shortly after signing in and I am using the laptop. I also tried starting the computer in “Safe Mode” and “Safe Mode with Networking” and still manages to freezing after signing in. I also tried running a virus scan with Avast for the computer and during the scan the computer freezes. Every time the laptop freezes I have to perform a hard reset.

Is there anything I can do to get the laptop to start working properly without losing all my files. I have a external hard drive and want to move my files to it but every time I have tried to transfer the files I have been unsuccessful because of the freezing.

At this point, I will take any suggestions and help.

Thank you in advance

and when did this start… did you do anything special ?

This started on Saturday. Friday the laptop was working perfectly fine. All of a sudden on Saturday afternoon while using it, it just froze i could not use the mouse or anything. Performed a hard reset and restarted the laptop in safe mode to run a virus scan and it froze again in safe mode while performing a virus scan.

since you have a hp computer…they usually come with a preinstalled trail version of Norton…did you uninstall this before installing avast ?

Yes. I had an issue around December last year when I had a Trojan virus and had to delete Norton. The only problem left over from that situation is that I can not turn on my firewall. When Avast located the virus and deleted the file, I was unable to turn on the firewall. So for the past 9 months I have not had the ability to turn it on. Since Saturday the only thing I have been successful in doing with the computer is running Malwarebytes, which came up with 0 infected files. My attempt to run avast was stalled when it froze. The frustrating situation is it still freezes in safe mode. Just don’t know what to do because I do not want to consistently perform a hard reset every time and risk further damage.

have you run Norton removal tool ?

if not run it and reboot…Nr #26a http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

did that help ?

I’ll have to give it a try when I get home. I am posting currently from my work computer. I was fearful to contact the forum from my laptop and it freezes. I will try and let you know the results as soon as i perform it. Thank you!

if nothing changes then i suggest you attach a OTL log here so essexboy can have a look inside…he may spot the problem then

you find OTL and instructions on how to run it here http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

Norton was removed from my computer. However it still is freezing and won’t let me even get to this posting. I am using a different computer to make this post. Any suggestions on how to proceed?

**** End of log ****

I have noticed i have not gotten a response yet since the posting of the log and i tried using the laptop last night and it froze once again…can anyone help or know why it is just freezing?

I’ll try to get you some attention.

Hi sorry we missed you

As it stands nothing is apparent from the logs

Does the system just totally lock or does it reboot itself ?

I will run it outside of windows and have a look there

Download the following three programmes to your desktop :

  1. WiNTBootIc
  2. Windows 7 64bit RC
  3. Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64

Extract wintoboot to your desktop
Insert a USB drive of at least 1GB
Run Wintoboot

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/wintoboot.JPG

Drag and drop the Windows 7 ISO to the programme in the space indicated
Tick the Format box and accept the warnings
Press Do It

You will see it progressing

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/usb%20progress.JPG

It will let you know when it is done
Then copy FRST to the same USB

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/73555776/frstwintoboot.JPG

Insert the USB into the sick computer and start the computer. First ensuring that the system is set to boot from USB
Note: If you are not sure how to do that follow the instructions Here

When you reboot you will see this although yours will say windows 7.
