I run Windows 98SE.I Cleaned McAfee Internet Security Suite 6 because of endless problems.I installed Avast! 4 Home Edition.I also run Zone Labs Firewall. iAVS updates are successful, but windows freezes on the download shutdown box. A check shows “Antivirus Setup not responding”. I must power- down and restart. On restart everything is fine. Kindly help thanks.
Try doing a repair of avast by going to add/remove programs then avast then repair or if that doesnt work try reinstalling it.

Alvaldo,
This is symtomatic of a shortage of available memory.
Rebooting will regain lost memory automatically.
What exactly do you mean by the Download Shutdown box?
Are you referring to the “download” progress box?
If Windows is freezing prior to completion of the download, then more than likely, the Avast setup file is corrupt or incomplete.
You said that when you reboot, everything is ok.
Does this mean that Avast works properly?
???
Looks more like a Windows problem to me.
start > run > sfc (have your Windows cd ready)
Thanks for the enthusiastic responses.System Memory 312MB Ram. Avast works properly except as follows: rt click “a"ball- select updating- clickjAVS update- the program updates- then the"Summary Box” appears with proper details such as :vps already up to date : current version 0446.2.
Once this box opens the computer freezes. CTRL+ALT+DELs highlights “Avast Antivirus Setup (not responding)” The only way out is to kill the power, and restart and all systems o.k again. repair did not change things. Did not try windows as yet.

Shut down ZA and try doing an update. If it works without ZA, then ZA is blocking avast!.
you have tried here?

Had the “freeze” problem for some time and your link has fixed it!
Thank you

Alvaldo,
Try the link that IntheWild provided. It seems like it will do the trick for you since you do have Win 98SE.
Many thanks for the inspiration to stay the course. I opted for the ZA approach first. In ZA there is an option “Antivirus Monitoring” which was always turned on. I turned this off. I tried updating and the system again froze. I restarted and shutdown ZA and did a perfect update. I restarted ZA and did 4 updates. All perfect.
The “Antivirus Monitoring” feature tracks antivirus software installed on your computer and lets you know when that antivirus is out-of-date or turned off. This secondary alerting system works as a back-up to your antivirus warning and update system. Real source for conflict.
Thanks again to a great team.
Vlk, is this issue related to the ZA corrections of the last update?
Technical I don’t think so because that feature is still turned on on mine and I never had a conflict.
