computer freezing with Avast 5

AFTER RUNNING AVAST 4, ZONEALARM AND XP SUCCESSFULLY TOGETHER FOR AGES, I HAVE HIT PROBLEMS IMMEDIATELY AFTER INSTALLING AVAST 5. MY COMPUTER STARTED FREEZING STRAIGHT AWAY. I HAD TO UNINSTALL AVAST 5, IN SAFE MODE, THEN ALL WAS WELL AGAIN.

I’M RUNNING VISTA, AVAST 5 AND ZONEALARM, ON MY LAPTOP, WITH NO PROBLEMS.

CAN ANYONE HELP???

Drop ZA.
Reinstall avast.
Should work now.

I suggest an installation from scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
  6. Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
  7. Check and post the results.

There is no problem using ZA as a firewall.

Follow Tech’s advice and let us know how it goes.

I followed Tech’s advise.

Strange things have been happening. Generally, first I can get into Outlook Express and use it ok. Then I use Internet Explorer and things happen. On a couple of occasions, the Avast icon has disappeared from the tray, and on another ossasion the ZA icon, too.
Each time I shut the computer down, I get an error box saying ZA - End Programme and then another box saying, ZA not responding.

Should I have something turned on or off in Avast, that’s causing incompatability problems?

What’s Windows Firewall like? Should I use that instead of ZA?

In some computers, ZA has issues with avast…
In my personal opinion, I suggest other firewalls:

Comodo
Online Armour
PCTools
Outpost Firewall Free

Personal Firewall Tests & Results. Firewall rating:

  1. XP FW is only one way, but you can use it while changing to another one…
  2. No, not the XP one, use another 3rd party FW…! (See Tech’s posting…!)

Outpost Firewall Free +1
Comodo -1

I WAS WANTING TO CONTINUE WITH ZA THOUGH. IF THIS ONLY STARTED WITH UPDATING TO VERSION 5, THEN IT’S AN AVAST ISSUE.

OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HAD PROBLEMS TOO, UPGRADING.

IS THERE NO WAY I CAN CONFIGURE AVAST SO IT DOESN’T CLASH. ??? ???

THERE MUST BE OTHERS WHO HAD THIS PROBLEM.

You can search the forum for related topics…!
Btw, which other security related programs are installed…??

no others running.

  1. See if your system is clean.

did all you said.

The detections based only on the file names and their location (strange to see .dlls in the program folder especially if they aren’t in a sub-folder of a program) - Run MBAM again and this time when the scan is complete, all detections should have a check mark in the box to the left of the entry, leave them selected (or select if not selected). At the bottom of the window there is a button, Remove Selected, click that and the items will be removed.

Let Mbam remove these threats…! (See David’s post above)
