Computer Freezing

Good Afternoon All

Today the computer would not start beyond the desk top where Avast orange ball showed with a red X on it and then this cross was replaced by an exclamation mark. After two more turns of the ball it stopped completely, the screen froze and the clock stopped as well. The only action possible was to shut the computer down with the power button.

Avast 5 has been installed since 23/02/10 and until today has been working seemingly correctly.

Other actions on the computer have been:-

Wed., 24/2/10 Installation Trusteer Rapport Security program automatic update

Fri., 26/2/10 15.00 hrs Windows Updates KB976662 and KB979306
16.50 hrs CCleaner Update
16.59 hrs Paint.NET Update
17.09 hrs Remove Skype
17.10 hrs Remove Skype web features

Sat., 27/2/10 11.00 hrs Remove SpyWare Doctor and Browser Defender

On the Saturday morning the computer was slow to start with some freezing at “loading personal settings” screen but eventually started normally after a couple of switch off/on attempts.

Do any of these details indicate why Avast froze on Start Up? (i.e. x and ! on orange ball)

Managed to start computer today with System Restore in Safe Mode back to “Before KB976662/979306” but am now left with above actions reversed and unsure of which ones to repeat, or if there is some sort of clash with Avast.

Any help and guidance gratefully received.

Best regards

ROY

Zip dump files (*.mdmp) from this location :

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\log

and upload to :
ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming

alghorabaaa, due to a software bug of the forum, the prefix http is being added to the ftp one.
The correct site is just ftp.

Yes;
it is :

(ftp*:*//*ftp.avast.com/incoming)

remove (*)

hello tech good luck! ;D

Thanks for the help, but I do not understand how to do this as I only have limited computer experience. Any chance of a click by click run through of how to do it?

Regards

ROY

Hi

Just go to this folder :
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Alwil Software\Avast5\log

and select all files that ended with ( .mdmp ), then right click and ( WinZip >> Add to Zip file …) …

now copy the file …

and open the next page, but remove * from URL:
( ftp*:*//*ftp.avast.com/incoming )

i suggest to use Internet Explorer; after you open the page, click ( View >> Open FTP Site in Windows Explorer )

finally Paste the Zip file here …

they will check your files later …

Good Afternoon Alghorabaaa

Many thanks for your help and instructions.

Best regards

ROY
