Computer has COMPLETELY FROZE after avast update installed.

:frowning: >:( >:(

I am running windows 7 home premium, sp1, 64 bit.
Avast box popped up (as it usually does for nearly anything)- an update was available.
I installed the update. The computer needed to reboot - I did have programs running that i forgot about. Closed the programs then initiated restart of computer.

Immediately after restart, I couldn’t connect to Internet- my Internet was not even listed.
I initiated a second restart.

Programs were disabled (Intel wireless, bluetooth, Internet). I tried to enable the programs with no luck.
And my computer was running VERY slow. The only way I could do anything with my computer was to bring up the task manager and close the processes.
Ran a virus scan- went to bed.
When I got back home today, my husband told me he couldn’t even do a system restore, can’t connect to Internet- nothing.

I tried to repair the avast program. After 2 hours of the program running- I closed
I tried uninstall with the same results.

I closed everything down. The avast version installed is 7.0.1456.0

Something got messed up somewhere ??? Please follow the instructions here - http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility for removing avast in safe mode.

Note to download and save a new copy of avast first before removing the current copy, i’ll assume your on free http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe

Once removal is completed reboot back into normal mode and run the new install.

I have the same exact issue. As soon as I removed Avast the problem has gone away. I would like to re-install but I’m a little hesitant. Did re-downloading a fresh copy of Avast and re-installing help?

What anti virus program(s) where installed prior to installing avast! and, how where they removed ???

Avast was the first for both computers. I have been an Avast fan for a a couple of years and this is the first problem I have ever had.

…I used Avast Uninstall Utility http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Are these new computers ? was there a preinstalled AV on the system when purchased ?

They are both new computers. One is a custom built and the other is an ASUS G75V 3D. Neither of them have had previous Antivirus. Since removing Avast I have opened a ticket for this issue and I have installed System Security Essentials. If Avast can resolve this issue I will uninstall SCE and re-install Avast…

Neither of them have had previous Antivirus.
Almost all new computers come with trial ware of an AV which needs to be totally uninstalled before avast! is installed.

I believe Asus notebooks come with TrendMicro installed as i have one myself

Craigb and Bob3160, thank you for your help but I feel like we are going in circles. I don’t know how else to say it. No other AntiVirus has been installed prior to my issues…

I removed Avast and the problem went away. I had version 6 (which worked fine) and when it upgraded to 7 is when the problems started.

Back to the original question. Has anybody (that has had the problem) tried installing a fresh copy of version 7? Does it work? Does the workstation/laptop continue to freeze?

Thank you for your help.

Try a clean install by running the avast removal tool in safe mode then reinstall the latest avast.
No freeze issues here and iv virtually got the same notebook as your self ( G74Sx ) and my nephew has just recieved the G75Vw which had trendmicro on it by the way so i’d suggest having a good dig around the system to find it and uninstall it. It may or may not be activated but will still pose an issue being on the system then run the vendors removal tool to delet remnants http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

I got a response from the ticket I put in with Avast. Apparently they are going to refund my year subscription for 3 PC’s. I asked them the same questions here and I never got a response back. I’m not sure why they are just refunding and not troubleshooting first.

When I purchased the ASUS laptop (online) there was an option for AntiVirus. I selected “no antivirus software”. I knew I was going to be using Avast. I will need to look at what people are saying about Microsoft Security Essentials. It is really hard to turn away from something that is free. On the other hand, I really like Avast. I’m sure I will repurchase it in a few months when they work out the bugs with version 7.

Did you try the clean install method suggested by craigb ???

Can I join the club? . . . same thing happened to me 2-3 weeks ago. Updated avast pro and after reboot nothing. XP-h appears to have crashed. It’s asking for a disc just to start.

I’m going to do the safe mode uninstall and see what happens.

up-date . . . . Reg. add/remove unistall in safe mode appears to have fixed the problem.

My other computer is asking me to update avast-pro too. Should I uninstall that as well?

These are both older (6yr+) computers and have had other av programs before avast.

A new clean install of avast is always prefered imo when it comes to changing versions.

You need to make sure you have run the removal tools for all you previous AV’s before installing avast, many of the most popular removal tools can be found here http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

Hi,
“Forgive me in advance for my ignorance, but without it you wouldn’t be a hero.” me

I also did the Avast upgrade to 7. etc, and have had nothing but problems since. I tried the uninstall/repair option. It won’t let me. I was able to repair Java but not Avast.

I tried your suggestion for the unistall download, my sys won’t let me download anything. (Wouldn’t let me download Firefox either.)

I have a Dell Inspiron basic, running Vista Windows Business; 32 bit op sys.

I did uncheck some box in control panel at some point when trying to fix my sys which I am sure added fuel to the fire. I wish I could remember which one. In my mind I thought I might be unchecking letting other networks use my computer or something along those lines.

Can you help me, please and thank you,
M
