Computer intermittently freezing

I am using XP SP3 with Firefox browser.

Since installing Avast Antivirus version 2015.10.3.2225 on my computer it has been intermittently freezing. It suddenly stops responding, the screen is frozen, the cursor won’t move and the only option is to shut it down by pressing continuously on the power button.

I uninstalled it today and attempted to reinstall what I had before, which I didn’t have any problems with: version 2015.10.2.2218. I used the download link here for it, but version 2015.10.3.2225 has been installed instead?

Would you kindly give me a link for version 2015.10.2.2218. I want to use that until hopefully the issue gets rectified…I see that some other XP SP3 users have had it too.

Here you go: http://public.avast.com/~havel/2218/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe

Thank you very much for your help.

I assume Avast Antivirus developers either read all the issues that are reported here or get notified of them so that they can work on them?

Would you also give me a link for the version inbetween 2015.10.2.2218 and 2015.10.3.2225 please, I haven’t tried that one before.

  1. You’re welcome.
  2. Well, let’s hope so…
  3. Sorry, I only got links for build 2218.

Ok Asyn…

You’re always a great help.

Glad I could help Alicia.

Same problem here. Internet Security with paid license. Program version 10.3.2225, virus db 150817-1, installed in Windows Vista SP2 and Windows 7 SP1. There is not any event log entry, just freezes everything and have to hard reset the machine.
Do you think that link would be useful for my case?
Why doesnt AVAST test their software before release it to users?
I had to uninstall the antivirus to go online and get here without get frozen before I can post my problem.

I think you will find it is related to the Firefox browser interaction.

You could be right but I uninstalled Firefox 39.0, went back to 37, then went back to an earlier version, and still had freezing issues. If it’s a compatibility issue it isn’t because Firefox made a change at the same time as Avast.

Uhmm I dont’ have FireFox installed, but IE 9 - 11 and Opera. And both PCs got frozen. Uninstalled Avast IS and everything is working without any trouble. The problem is that the PCs havent any antivirus. If Avast doesnt solve this quickly I will have to buy another antivirus.

There’s a link to 2218 a few posts before this and that should be fine. I’m using 2215 and that’s definitely ok. There should be a link for 2215 somewhere on this forum. If it’s hard to find you can also get it from FileHippo.

You probably didn’t see…I mentioned earlier that I used a link on this forum that was definitely for 2218, but 2225 was installed instead?

The link Asyn provided is the one that I shall now use. Thanks for the FileHippo tip.

** Just seen useful information under: ‘Just a collection. All versions of avast.’ topic

The freezing issue started with 2223 so get a previous version (2218 or less).

Don’t get it from FileHippo because it will give you the latest version even if it says it’s a previous one. Get it from oldapps.com.

just to add to list, same freezing issues here. see signature for system details. only 2 basic shields +
home network scan.

Thanks for that information ‘bender01’.

Thanks for adding to list ‘skinnypops’ and to all other contributors.

Hi again and thanks for your answers and help. Buuuut

  1. I’ve installed the 10.2.2215 version (with and without internet connection), then
  2. went to options->udates->Manual Updates for program and virus db,
  3. introduce the file license and it starts to download the current version 2225 and the PC freezes few minutes later.

The 2215 and 2218 versions don’t install the FireWall Shell and AntiSpam Shield

How can I prevent that “automatic program update”. I just want the old version with the FireWall Shield

I just want the old version with the FireWall Sheld
what avast are you installing? avast free and avast PRO does not have firewall

I have Internet Security with 3 licenses for 2 years, ends April 2016. I downloaded the 2215 free version that Asyn suggested and installed as usual, then desactivate the updates and added the license file- It went directly to download the new version!!!
The free version downloaded from oldapp.com

But the real problem is that it goes directly to update, not matter if I choose or not “Manual Updates”

Do what you were doing in going back to 2215 but…

Don’t click the Program update button in Image 1 - only click the Virus Definitions update. Click the Settings button and set updates to manual or it will also update the program.

Don’t click the update button in Image 2 - it will update the program to 2225 even if you have updates set to manual. It 's best to change the Update square to Browser Cleaner or something else.

Thanks Moznewbie. I unistalled it in secure mode, run avastclear, installed 2215 back and open the options to update the virus definition file, buuuut I couldn’t. The update button was disabled because Avast was very busy updating the program to version 2225.

Unfortunatly it does it automatically, as soon as it gets connection to internet.

Installing without internet connection is posible, but you can not update the virus definition file and some day I would have to go online, wouldnt I? LOL.
