Computer not working after avast update

http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=47936.0

I have a similar issue. I allowed my avast 4.8 Home to update–it wasn’t the usual blue update. It was a green one about a newer version. I let it update than let it restart my computer. I come back ten minutes later to my computer on…but showing on my wallpaper and the mouse icon.
The toolbar and all icons were not there. I restarted again. Same results.
I had to enter safe mode and do a system restore to get my computer back. Now I’m waiting some what paranoid for that green update to come back and my computer to get trashed by it.

Why is avast’s update making my computer not work?

Please help. ???

 Hi :

I usually wait about 4 days after a new PROGRAM “Update” has been released
before I get it downloaded and installed on my computer, waiting to see IF
there has been reported problems with “it” . Got my PROGRAM Update
yesterday and had no ill effects. In your Situation, it MAY be helpful IF you
told us the SPECIFIC Name of your Operating System and the Name(s) of all
your security programs, possibly including Info on your Firewall .

Hello =3

I have Windows XP Home edition (version 2002) with Service Pack 3. And for security, 24/7 I have avast 4.8 home edition and Online Armor. But added, I have hijack this (for the occasional virus mishaps and getting help on the MBAM forum), Malwarebyte’s Anti Malware, Super Antispyware, Ccleaner, and Defraggler.

The firewall was recommended by the staff at MBAM and I’ve had no virus problems with Online Armor + Avast.

Bump

Hi lunora,

Did you have any AV prior to avast?
If so How was it removed?
It may be necessary to use the relevant removal tool for the product.

One thing that may help, the “signature” of the Avast program will have changed following the program update.
Check that the new version is allowed in OnlineArmour.

Hello Scott,

AV? What’s that? Anti-Virus? If so, I’ve had Bitdefender, Zonealarm, and AVG. All of which I got rid of except for a zonealarm folder that wont let me delete it. Bitdefender slows my computer down, Zonealarm was too much, and AVG sucked. Avast has worked the best

I’ve removed it the normal way and even use CCleaner to remove things fully. I’ve had avast long enough on this computer to need the renewal key xD;

Tarq57 - I don’t know about that. I mean my Online Armor just redid the learning process today so maybe it’ll be better?

Hi lunora,

Yes AV is antivirus, maybe I shouldn’t abreviate it…

So is this still in safe mode? or Normal mode?

I would say it is a good idea to remove the left over parts from the previous installations with the proper removal tools:

Ensure that you choose the right version for your OS (either 32 or 64 bit)

For BitDefender:

Download Link (32-bit)

Download Link (64-bit)

For AVG:

www.avg.com/download-tools

I can’t find one for ZA, and that folder may be the issue…

Hiya,

Depends on how common an abreviation is as to whether or not to use one =3

Nawps. Not in Safe Mode. My computer has been working fine after I did a system restore, and I haven’t let my avast update nor have I gotten the green update since.

They are already gone. Cept for the Zonealarm, the folks at MBAM helped me and they also said the Zonealarm folder isn’t doing any harm…I think.

I can't find one for ZA, and that folder may be the issue...

can’t the folder be removed with the file assassin tool in MBAM ?

Is that in the free version of MBAM or the professional version?

Hi Lunora,

It is available in the free version, on the ‘more tools’ tab.

Is that in the free version of MBAM or the professional version?
In free and pro, you fiend it under "More Tools" top right

I tried but it took me through the Zone Alarm folder → Zone Labs " → then to a whole bunch of stuff in it. I didn’t use file Assassin because I wasn’t sure. ^^; I did post thread on MBAM asking how to get rid of Zone Alarms 100% though.
