Computer won't boot after scheduling boot-time scan

I scheduled a boot-time scan (using Avast free edition) and then clicked the “Restart computer” button. On the subsequent reboot, it gets as far as detecting my drives, and then freezes. I thought it might just be a delay because it was doing the scan, but I left it for a few hours (far longer than a regular scan took), and nothing happened. I restarted and it froze in the same spot. Any ideas on what is happening or what I can do?

Thanks,
RF

that has nothing to do with avast you need to get your pc checked out for problems with hardware

Hi rf1234.

Which OS are you using?
It’s 32bit system or 64bit?
Are you using the last version of Avast! (5.1.864)?

I just scheduled a boot scan a few days ago and worked fine on my system.

Hi Silk0,

I went into the BIOS settings at startup and changed the boot sequence (I have an old OS (Win98SE) installed on the primary partition of a second hard drive) and got it to come up. I guess that must have cleared the pending boot scan somehow, because after that I could boot to my main hard drive (running WinXP sp2). I still had all kinds of bizarre problems, but I uninstalled Avast and then they went away. The version of Avast I had was 5.0.677.

Thanks,
RF
