My Windows 7 PC won’t boot. When I try to boot to safe mode, it hangs on C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\aswrvrt.sys until the computer reboots. I have already tried to use the Windows Recovery tool. I have run the FRST tool (FRST.txt is attached). Any help would be much appreciated!
Please go to https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0 and follow the directions for attaching the other logs needed:
- MBAM
- aswMBR.exe
After doing this, do not attempt to make any changes to your machine (this includes trying to fix it). After you have posted your logs, someone will be along to review them. Thank you.
What happened prior to the non-boot as several system files are missing
First from the command prompt type in the following command :
chkdsk c: /r
Once that has completed try a normal boot. If that fails then run FRST and in the Search box type the following :
IERTUTIL.dll;URLMON.dll;WININET.dll
Then press the search files button.
On completion a log called search.txt will be generated post that
This boot issue started when I tried to restart my computer after installing updates (Windows, iTunes, and [possibly?] avast). I hadn’t restarted my computer in a while, so I’m not sure what updates were applied.
I have the chkdsk c: /r running through the System Recovery Options command console. It seems like it is hung at 34% of the “Windows is verifying free space…” check. What is weird is that the command caused windows to search my backup hard drive. The file system is FAT32 instead of NTFS and is labeled as FANTOM.
Should I stop the current check and try another drive letter, let the check continue, or should I shut down and unplug my spare HD?
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Yes stop that and confirm that it is c drive where the OS is residing
I stopped the chkdsk on C and switched to the one showing as E (which is the one that should be my C drive and has Windows on it). It completed and restarted. I was unable to boot (it got to the Windows Logo Screen, held there for a while, and rebooted).
I then ran the FRST search. I have attached the log from that. Sorry for the delay, I had to wait overnight for the chkdsk to complete and then I had work.
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press fix.
On completion try a normal boot
I attempted the fixlist on the computer. When I rebooted, the computer held at the Windows logo screen until it restarted. I tried to boot into safe mode and it is still hanging at aswrvrt.sys. Here is the fix log:

OK the missing files are replaced, could you now run a fresh FRST scan to ensure nothing else is missing
here is the search log!
A few more missing ones. Some I will replace now others we will have to search for
REPLACE
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press fix.
Once that has completed run FRST and in the Search box type the following :
volsnap.sys;Bootcat.cache
Then press the search files button.
On completion a log called search.txt will be generated post that
I did the fix and the search. Here are the logs for both (i don’t know if you need the fix log, but figured it would save some time if you needed it!)
OK this looks to be the last file replacement
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST and press fix.
On completion try a normal boot
Well, it still didn’t boot – Held at the Windows Logo and restarted itself. I launched FRST and ran another scan. I attached the fix log and the new scan.
Could you now run startup repair at least 3 times please, rebooting between each we need to regenerate the boot cache and this should do it
Ugh – I must have really messed up my computer this time. It is still restarting at the Windows Logo screen.
It appears that the boot cache generator at C:\Windows\System32\catroot{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} is badly broken, in which case the only alternative is to re-install windows. Do you have a disc image ? If not you will have to back up your data using something like the reatogo desktop
Ok, I can get at the files to backup all my important documents. I was kind of expecting this. Thank you very much for all of your assistance!
Sorry it was not better news
