computer won't restart after scheduling a boot -time scan

I was checking messages on a web-site, and a red window for Avast (free version) came on and said that a virus had been stopped before it had a chance to run, and said that my next step was to run a boot-time scan, and did I want to schedule and restart now. I clicked yes. My computer now gets to the screen to go into Safe Mode, or to Restore, and then goes to a black with a cursor flashing at the top left of the screen. I can get into the F1 menu, but it won’t even go to Safe Mode, or Restore. Is my computer screwed, or is there something I can do?

Do you have Windows CD/DVD?

Really, it shouldn’t be happening… avast shouldn’t do anything for just scheduling a boot time scanning and even run it… It’s strange…

I had similar problem happen this past wknd. Avast notifier said it found web32:rootgen(?) and said i should restart and start boot scan. So I did, and puter got to page where i could click f2 or f10 and then went to black screen with blinking cursor. F8 would not work. Found my OpSys CD (XP SrvcPack2)and was able to get into the recovery console. Ran chkdsk and that didn’t work. Then I googled “avast boot scan blinking cursor” and found many people apparently have similar issues. One of the links suggested running FIXMBR then FIXBOOT. I did this using the CD to get into recovery console. Puter rebooted and it started to boot into Windows. BUT, now avast is running boot scan and it looks like it will take hours for that to complete. Hopefully, though i’m on my way to a full recovery.
