I have a few questions:-
Other than things running very slowly I noticed changes since adding Smiley Central which have now removed.
My server is Primusonline (AOL) Have XP Windows Broadband DSL.
Noticed Adware & Trojan in infected files (should I delete these & how do I do same)?
Haven’t had any warnings of infections for ages except due to Smiley Central.
When I first installed Avastemany things popped up constantly which I moved to Chest.
How can I be sure Avaste is running correctly? Something is very wrong !!!
Also when I do my weekly scans was told there’s no need to scan archive files or use resident scanner. Is this correct?
In addition to removing Smiley Central you should check for the MyWay Toolbar and remove it too, if found.
Its best to keep moving things to the chest rather than deleting them. They can’t harm anything there and can always be deleted later. If avast! is moving things to the chest I would say its running OK. When you say something is very wrong what do you mean? Are you getting any errors?
I normally include archives in the first scan after installation but not for for weekly scans. Under the circumstances, however, I would suggest clearing your temporary files and cookies followed by a boot scan with archives. The resident protection, which is different from the on-demand scan, should remain on at all times. This is the real-time protection against malware.
In addition to the boot scan mentioned above you would do well to scan with AVG Antispyware and AdAware SE. Free versions can be downloaded here
Please, what’s the best way to clear temp. files and cookies?
Forget to mention I have Spybot search & destroy 1.4. Would you suggest I still download AUG antispyware & Adware SE?
Haven’t had to move anything to Chest as the opportunity to do so HASN’T come up which either means I’m very very lucky or something is wrong.
Kind of miss the alarms going off.
You can scan with Soybot S&D but yes, I suggest you also use AVG Antispyware and AdAware to make sure everything is gone. Smiley Central can install a lot of bad things. If those scans come up clean, you’re still symptom free, and avast! is not giving you any error messages I would say you’re fine.
