No doubt a dumb question from a new user - but here goes!
I use Mozilla Thunderbird, with Gmail, on a Windows XP Home system and want my in/out mails to be scanned by Avast! 4.7 Home edition.
I use Gmail’s POP3 & SMTP servers for three POP incoming accounts for our three addresses with gmail : but have only one SMTP, outgoing server, account set up as per Thunderbird’s recommendations.
I have downloaded stunnel and installed it in my “C” directory , (running it as a service), together with Win32 open SSL, also installed in “C”
May some kind soul tell me exactly how to configure everything so it just works?
I’ve tried various pieces of advice but I just cannot get it to work. I see on one advisory that the Avast!.ini file needs modifying, but I have to say I can’t find that in 4.7 installation folder - is it using an alias these days, or am I too dull to see it? :
If you follow the example of Norm321 then you will need to change the ports on your GMail accounts in Thunderbird to use 11110 for POP and 11025 for SMTP.
To ensure that your GMail traffic is scanned by avast:
Internet Mail Provider > Customize > Redirect tab
Add port 11110 to the POP box using a comma (,) to separate the new port number from any already there.
Add port 11025 to the SMTP box using a comma (,) to separate the new port number from any already there.
Uncheck the “Ignore local communication box”. Click “OK”.
By the way there is no good reason at all to only have one SMTP entry for GMail in Thunderbird. If you would like a separate entry for each account then just go ahead and set up more SMTP entries and select the SMTP entry you want associated with account in the Account Setting panel of Thunderbird.
We’re off to the UK on hols & family visits for a couple of weeks tomorrow - will try AGAIN with a fresh download of stunnel & SSL when we return to Spain.
