Conflict with IE

After unsuccessfully trying to run a Windows Update (My PC would not start after the update and I needed to do a system restore to get it up and working again), I am now unable to open Internet Explorer 9 or Update/re-install Google Chrome. Chrome indicates that my firewall is preventing it from connecting to the update server and IE simply will not start.

The problem details in the error message for IE are:

It seems that the fault is with the aswWebRepIE64.dll file (which based on the name, I believe is related to Avast).

Any thoughts on how I may be able to fix this error?

You can disable webrep until the new version comes out which will stop IE crashing when multiple tabs are open but this issue is not related to windows update not functioning or IE not opening, your problem would lie elsewhere i think.

Restores also tend to mess with avast so maybe an avast repair is in order or a clean install.

Thank you for the help. I actually uninstalled Avast and it corrected the problem. I was then able to successfully run Windows update. After that I re-installed Avast. There must have just been a conflict there with IE.

Thanks again.

Your welcome

I am using Avast 7.0.1456

I have the same IE conflict . I get IE not responding erros messages all the time!!!

How do I resolve it?

Using Windows 7, 64 bit Home Premium Edition, SP1, all updates… and IE9 64 bit version 9.0.8121

How do I disable webrep?? Is this an Avast setting???

You can disable by right clicking on the top taskbar of your browser and select disable webrep.

Excellent, thanks.

  1. Forgive my ignorance but was was the intended purpose of webrep? All the interface says is “protection of web browers”

  2. As there is an IE confict with Avast, I must keep this disabled for now. Will future Avast releases address the conflict??

WebRep provides user review ratings of search links and also includes a phishing filter, the next program update should fix this issue.
