Conflict with Microsoft Office

Hello,

I am having a conflict when using Avast with Microsoft Office 97.
Here is my information:

  1. Windows 2000 Professional
  2. Avast 4.6 Home Edition - Build: Feb. 2006 [4.6.763]
  3. VPS file - 0606-2, 02/07/06
  4. Intel Celeron 2.4GHz, 512 MB RAM
  5. Dial-up internet
  6. Email client - Outlook Express 5.5
  7. No other security software

Problem:

When I go onto the Internet I can no longer use Microsoft Word or Excel (Microsoft Office 97). When I try to start either program nothing happens or just the start-up logo appears, but the program does not start. After some time, I get a message that says the program is not responding. Even after disconnecting from the internet, the problem persists, neither Word nor Excel will start…

However, if I do not go onto the Internet or if I re-boot and do not go onto the Internet, then I can use either Word or Excel. Yet there is a ten second delay after clicking on them before they will start.

None of these problems happened before installing Avast.
I then un-installed Avast and everything returned to normal, with Word or Excel opening instantly and working perfectly; whether I’m on the Internet or not, made no difference.

I then reinstalled Avast and all the above problems returned.

I appreciate any help from you on this problem.

Try to temporarily stop avast! resident protection to see if it helps (instead of uninstalling avast! completely). If it does, please try to stop avast! resident providers one by one (instead of stopping the whole resident protection) to see if it helps; if avast! causes the problem, we’d need to know what part in particular.
