Conflicting Messages

I just upgraded to Avast v 5 and restarted my Win XP PC.

When I hold my mouse cursor over the Avast icon on my taskbar, the window pop up says “your system is not fully protected”.
Yet when I startup the software, it says “secured”.

Which one is correct??? ???
Hoe do I get them in sync??

It’ll take some time to start up, so both would be correct…!

Does it happen just after boot? Avast services are being loaded… it’s normal.

Probably both are correct, if you are quick enough left click the icon and the display should tell you what isn’t running. My bet is the Mail Shield and Web Shield, which are user based starts and have to wait for other services before they start.

These shouldn’t be an issue as at the time you aren’t collecting email or are connected to the internet. They should however be up and running relatively quickly, but you didn’t say how long this was for.

When I posted my question, it was just about 20 minutes after upgrading and restarting my PC.

I got on-line and registered specifically to ask it since I looked at the forum and did not find a post that asked it. Is just me with this problem, I would have thought it would concern people.

It’s been about 2 hours now that I have had my PC turned on and the pop-up window still stays “not fully protected”.
I checked the real time shields menu option and it says all are running.

So is that enough time or does it need more?
I guess this is going to happen every time I restart. :stuck_out_tongue: ::slight_smile:

It should be a few seconds, not minutes and certainly not hours.

There should be more information in the avast Summary section, Current status. Does yours look like this image ?

If so scroll down and it should tell you what shields aren’t working.
Is there a Fix button, etc. and have you tried it ?

Are these avast processes running in the task manager, avastSvc.exe and avastUI.exe ?

When I start up Avast, it says “secured” with the green banner in the summary section.

That is the conflicting messages I am referring to.

Then where is this “your system is not fully protected” coming from as it reflects what the current status is and shouldn’t be hanging about for hours if you go back to the icon. To accompany that mouse over tool tip there should be an Exclamation mark in a triangle over the avast icon, see image, is that the case ?

Have you rebooted again after this problem, if not do so and see if it happens again ?

The Avast icon in my taskbar is normal - no triangle.
The pop window says “your system is not fully protected” when I hold the mouse cursor over it.

Sorry, is it me? ???
I thought I described this problem clearly. :-[

I have not restarted since posting, I’ll try that now.

I have rebooted.
No change. :frowning:

Avast icon pop-up says “not fully protected”
Avast summary says “secured”.

Any other suggestions??

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Are you using the latest version…?? (5.0.594)

It sounds like the OP needs a clean install given the history she reported. However, prior to doing this, are you using any other security software on the machine (firewall, etc.)?

As Asyn reported the newest build of Avast is 5.0.594. An uninstall of Avast and a clean install should resolve these problems.

To do an uninstall and clean install:

  1. Save a copy of newest version of Avast (5.0.594) for the version you need:
    http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exeFree,
    http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_pro.exePro,
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_ais.exeAIS, and save it to your HDD.
  2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility, aswClear5.exe http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD (NOTE: You will need to Uninstall both 4.8 and 5.0).
  3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
  4. Uninstall Avast through “Add/Remove Programs”.
  5. Boot into Safe Mode and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
  6. Reboot twice.
  7. Clean your computer up.
  8. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot twice.
  9. Get Internet access and update Avast definitions.
  10. Register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro or AIS.
  11. Reset your settings, if needed.

Please post your results. Thank you.

Yes, I am using the current version 5.0.594

Other software that I have installed are:
Spybot search and destroy
Malwarebytes

What do you mean by step 7, clean your computer up?
What should I be looking to do?

Spybot can make troubles with avast 5.x, better drop it.
You won’t need it anyway, as Mbam is much better…!

Or any other avast version… Or none.
They do not conflict, but Spybot is adding nothing nowadays…

Well, some reported it, but ok, that’s not the point here, as it’s at least nothing to keep.

Hi LadyLinda,

Before you get rid of anything, try this and let me know the results.

Open Windows Security Center and have a look around in it but do not change anything. Does everything look OK in the Security Center? Close the Security Center and then mouse over the avast icon in the task bar? Has the message changed or is it the same?

I checked the Windows Security Center: all features are ON.
Was there something specific I should look for?

Avast icon taskbar is the same, “not fully protected”.

I guess no one else had this problem.
Though it is minor, it is annoying.

I certainly haven’t seen anything like it in the forums, yes we see the tooltip but only for a few seconds and when people open the UI they might see the web or mail shields not yet started. However, once they are started the tooltip displays Your system is secured, never stays as it was especially when the UI is reporting secured.

I suggested you try an avast repair in an earlier reply, but you didn’t confirm if you had tried that ?

I have also asked other questions some of which haven’t received an answer. We ask questions to get a better understanding of the problem or to get confirmation, without information we are at best guessing.
