Since May 18th, 2018, my free Avast’s update has failed to establish connection. The Update Page always shows “connection not established” and “lastest update received” shows 2018/5/18. Avast fails to update automatically. Everyday I have to update the virus definition manally. I have tried to repair the software and reinstall it but I failed to fix the problem. Anyone can help me?
Sometimes we make changes to settings in Avast and then forget we made them. I know I’ve done that at times. (One time I meant to make program updates manual settings but made the virus settings manual too.)
See picture below for correct virus update settings and, if different, set to what you see below.
If your settings are correct, then reset your DNS settings to Google DNS, 8.8.8.8
Thanks for your reply. All the settings are correct. And reseting DNS does not help. The most strange thing is both the free avast on my two laptops show “connection not established”. On May 20, I took one of my laptop back to my country in different time zone. It appears that since then, the avast on the laptop taken away from US showed “connection not established”. When I came back, I found the avast on the other laptop left in the US but remaining shutting down also shows “connection not established”. I checked the license on the two avasts. They are different but I remember I used the same email address to register the avast. I am not sure if that is the problem. Can you help me out?
I suggest a clean install of avast as bob3160 shows here:
https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=204531.msg1466216#msg1466216
Notwithstanding the topic Bob is responding to is different, but a clean install should work for you. Be sure to save or obtain your license before beginning.
A clean install should re-establish your computer systems as being in your country, so this should work.
Is this Avast Free?
Thanks for your reply. I have tried that clean reinstall. Just like normal reinstallment, after I reinstall the free avast version, it shows “connnection established”. However, after I reboot my laptop, it shows “connection not established” again.
That is normal for it to show “connection not established” after a system reboot. Avast servers lost contact with your system when you rebooted and they need some time to reconnect.
Wait a few minutes; up to 30 minutes should be sufficient.
Unfortunately I have been waiting a few days. It still shows “connection not established”. So does the avast on the other laptop.
Have you changed router/modem?
No. I can update manually.
Anyone can help me?
Update to the latest version (18.5.2342): https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=219889.0
I have already tried, but it does not help.
Maybe related to your location (China)…
Could you show a screenshot of the “connection not established” and the last time a streaming update was received?
I am in the US now. The last time a streaming update was received is on 2018/6/19 when I updated the program yesterday.
See Reply # 1. Picture is attached that shows settings that work.
Your Settings box above is closed and I/we cannot see your virus/streaming update settings. Open the Virus Settings box by clicking the “v” on the Settings line.
What do you see?
Sorry about my last screen shot. Please help me solve the problem.
The streaming updates has been checked all the time.
- OS…? (32/64 Bit…? - which SP/Build…?)
- Other security related software installed…?
- Which AV(s) did you use before Avast…?
OS: win10 home 64bit 1803
no other security software
My laptop has been installed Avast since purchased and the update is good before May 18th 2018.
Will not be popular with others here, but I found that disabling the web shield will eliminate the problem. Which would indicate that the statement: " Firefox Tech stated that Avast is meddling with encrypted connections. The latest version of Firefox (Version 61) introduced a better security protocol TLS 1.3 but Avast cannot cope with it yet." from the previous post/thread is correct. Not recommending this as fix, just pointing out what I found.
