consrv.dll and other issues...

Still periodic notifications of Avast or windows defender not being active. Attached is the Malwarebytes log, came back clean.

Could you run the msfixit on this page and let me know if that resolves the problem http://support.microsoft.com/mats/windows_security_diagnostic/en-us

So far so good, the only thing that came up was that UAC was turned off.

After letting the system sit for a few minutes, still receiving warning that windows defender and avast are turned off.

OK next is to verify the repository before we actually reset it

Click start > all programs > accessories > right click cmd in the top and select run as administrator

Type the following commands and press after each command:

winmgmt/verifyrepository
winmgmt/salvagerepository

Restart the computer

I verified the repository, however, I have not received any warnings for 24 hours and several reboots. I do believe the issue is finally solved. Much appreciated for the help!

Once you are happy let me know and I will remove my rubbish ;D

Came up with a warning again after switching power settings on my laptop that antispyware was not enabled. No other symptoms, than the intermittent failure of windows to recognize Avast is running.

OK next phase and we will go a little deeper

  1. Go to control panel and open Administrative tools.
  2. Click on services.
  3. Go down to Windows Management Instrumentation.
  4. Stop this service. Stop Security Center service too. Set them to Automatically start.
  5. Exit out of this area, to your desktop.
  6. Right click Start, and choose Explore.
  7. Go to c:\windows\system32\wbem[b]repository[/b]. Delete this subdirectory ONLY. Leave the others there.
  8. Exit back to your desktop and reboot your computer (you might need to boot twice).

This will rebuild the deleted folder, and the database.
Once restarted, Windows Security Center should show the correct info.
Antivirus, and firewall, should now be recognized.

I was on my way to do this and notice that I don’t have a security center service. Root of the problem?

OK Dr watson lets now see if the major file is there ;D

Do you have a file named wscui.cpl in Windows\system32 folder?
If it exists, double click it to run Security Center.
If the file is missing, please copy it from another known computer.

THEN

Type: regedit and hit enter

Navigate to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wscsvc

Is that key present - if not let me know and I will give you an export of mine

Turns out the service was running, just hiding down at the bottom of the list with no description. I went ahead and deleted the repository and rebooted twice. Still receiving warnings that virus protection and spyware are turned off despite Avast being very active.

Hmm weird - OK I will do a little research on that as the security centre should now acknowledge Avast

Meanwhile I will clear my rubbish

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

[*]Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

:Commands [resethosts] [purity] [emptytemp] [EMPTYFLASH] [Reboot]

[*]Then click the Run Fix button at the top
[*]Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Remove ComboFix

[]Follow the prompts on the screen
[
]A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that

[*]Click Start.
[*]Open My Computer.
[*]Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
[*]Select the View Tab.
[*]Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
[]Click Yes to confirm.
[
]Click OK.

Much appreciated, thanks for all the help. I changed the security center to to automatic instead of automatic(delayed) so far that seems to have stopped the error right after start up that would end up resolving itself. Also, thanks for helping clear up 8GB of HD space that was taken up with old system restores.

Duh didn’t think of that - is it working OK now ?

So far after a few restarts all is well.

Glad to hear ;D
