Hi Scott and Tech,
Thank you both for your quick responses and your assistance. I appreciate your help very much. Please accept my apology for the length of this response…
To clarify…first, work is for a local non-profit 501(c)(3) agency - I do not know who installed the free version of the Avast! software, it was there when I came on board a few months ago. I am sorry to say that I had never heard of Avast!, nor had I any reason to read any of the software licensing agreements on the group’s computer - but I will definitely relay the software agreement information to them.
I bought Avast! Pro at the recommendation of one of the group’s “gurus” when I started having problems with my business PCs. I own a licensed graphic design company - I purchased the Pro version for my use.
My original email request for help went to the e-address Scott cited. (Still no response as of this morning.)
I could not cut and paste the original key - as I cannot find that email. But I will attempt to re-enter it again. Re the FAQ, the first computer (the one successfully licensed) had nothing but the Win XP SP 3 installed on it - my guru had to reformat it to get rid of the problems we were having. Neither the second PC nor the laptop (both Win XP, SP 3) have ever had an anti-virus program installed.
Both of those machines have the current date - July 10, 2009. I am really not sure about the admin rights, though, as I have not required my equipment be set up to be password protected or anything like that. I am sorry to say I am not very savvy regarding that particular part of the OS. I do know that when I boot up (on any one of the 3), they immediately show the desktop - whereas the group’s PC takes you first to a “User” screen. My laptop is the only one that shows a “User” screen, and then only when it’s woken up from “sleep” mode, so perhaps that is the problem with using the key on it.
I went to “About Avast” to copy the key - which was there; and I noticed this:
Type: Time Limited
Expiration: Thursday, September 03, 2009 1:12:10 PM
Updates expiration: Monday, April 01, 2013 1:00:00 AM
Does this mean that I will have to pay another fee in September or ??
Thank you, again, for your time, your patience and your help. Pug1ll
