Context sensitive menu scans

In previous versions there was the facility to right-click individual (newly downloaded) files in XP Windows Explorer and have Avast scan them on the hoof. Now to do this I have to open the User Interface and initiate a scan indirectly. Not a major hurdle but the shortcut was much more convenient. Has this facility been withdrawn or can I recreate it and how?

The setting for Explorer Scan is in Settings | Antivirus, then scroll down to Special Scans. Click on Settings by Explorer Scan. Some of those setting can be modified. I have under File Types, Scan all files and Content selected. Sorry, I don’t see where there’s a place to turn off or on the Right Click option for Windows Explorer.

I worked through your “routing” but am equally baffled how to recreate the previous context sensitive menu option. The only way appears to be to do a scan using the “select folder to scan” option which brings up Explorer. It achieves the same end but in a roundabout way. Wish someone could tell me why!

If you do not have avast Explorer scan, repair avast!

Start > Control panel > Add & Remove programs > select avast! and click " Change/Remove ". Highlight " Repair " and click Continue. Follow instructions. Reboot when finished

I can get to the point where it says on the heading “Configures the Scan command from Explorer’s context menu” followed by the blank Scan Areas box below, then ADD. I’ve got “scan all files” ticked then “content”. But none of this brings up the scan with Avast menu option from right clicking an individual file in Explorer as happened in the past Given that I have got to this stage I’m not convinced that my present Avast needs repairing, or if the facility just no longer exists, or if it is ignorance on the part of the user!

Rest assured it still exists - see attached screen shot. Avast 2014.9.0.2008, Windows 7 pro 64 bit.

Yea that’s exactly what I want to achieve! It came by default previously but I don’t seem to be able to get it now! :(. Conflict with XP / 32 bit??

@ Telegraph_Sam

Olddog has it. I have it (See images). There is no confict with XP/32 bit and avast! Explorer scanner. Most Evangelist here in the forums also run XP or Win 7 and have it too so " The facility exists".

If we have it and you don’t… Are you sure everything is rght in your avast! that is not worst it to execute a repair just in case ?

…Avast doesn’t appear in my Add / Remove Programs!! Even though clicking on the system tray > interface assures me that everything is OK. I’ll have to pass on this

If it doesn’t appear in Add /Remove, then your installation is suspect.
You could try installing a new copy of Avast over the top of the existing installation, to get the Add/Remove entry.

Otherwise, try running AvastClear.exe in safe mode, and follow that by running RejZor’s Avast cleanup tool in normal mode.
That should remove the majority of the existing installation and once that is done, do a clean installation of a new copy of Avast 2014.9.0.2008

I’m not at my “Avast” PC at present to check but I assume that avastclear.exe and RejZor’s are not in the Avast package and separate from what I assume is the standard uninstall facility.

Trouble is that the links to these two programs from the other thread don’t work - one results in Error 404 and the other is blocked by my Trend AV. Can I access them any other way?

It’s not that long since I reinstalled Avast so may be it’s the relics from the past that are causing the semi-malfunction.

Sorry, I should have provided the links.

RejZor’s Cleanup tool http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/

Am I right that within the standard Avast package there isn’t an Uninstall facility other than using the two dedicated tools that you have referred me to? I had been thinking of doing a standard uninstall first followed by yours to clean up the relics!

This method works…

I’d recommend a clean install of v9.

  1. Download Avastclear, Rejzors uninstall tool and the appropriate Avast program edition

Avastclear : http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
Rejzors Uninstall tool: http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/

  1. Uninstall Avast by control panel [If you don’t have Avast in control Panel go to #4]
  2. Uninstall in safe mode using Avastclear.
  3. Run Rejzors Uninstall Utility in Normal Mode (removes traces avastclear doesn’t) - reboot.
  4. Install the version you downloaded.
  5. Reboot.

There is a standard uninstall feature but as I understand it, that is only designed to uninstall the version it relates to.
Avast recommend the use of AvastClear.exe rather than the standard uninstall routine, perhaps because it may also remove remnants of previous versions.
RejZor’s cleanup is a bit more thorough again.

I wouldn’t say to use the avast uninstall utility ‘rather’ than the normal uninstall but in addition to it. Only in the case that you can’t uninstall normally (installation corruption) would you use it without having uninstalled normally.
