You don’t appear to have an active firewall ?

Undesirable (though unrelated to your spam:
C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
See http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/ALCMTR.EXE-240.html

Command: ALCMTR.EXE Description: Realtek AC97 Audio - Event Monitor. "Sypware" file used surreptitiously monitor one's actions. It is not a sinister one, like remote control programs, but it is being used by Realtek to gather data about customers File Location: %WinDir%

Also see, http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/alcmtr

If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it, preferably in safe mode.
AVG anti-spyware (formerly Ewido). Or SUPERantispyware Or Spyware Terminator.

This might well be able to hide from HiJackThis so some would suggest you rename hijackthis.exe to something else so it can’t evade detection, something like hjt.exe and run the program again after trying one of the above applications.

right ive run AVG anti-spyware, spybot search and destroy, AD_Aware, spyware terminator and used the online kaspersky, aswell as scanning with avast! I renamed Hijack This exe and below is the log. I also removed the ALCMTR.exe and O4 - HKLM..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE, i also used Crap Cleaner to remove temp files etc, but im still getting the same suspicious email warnings and ive ran out of ideas.
Thanks for the speedy reply David, any other help would be greatly appreciated.

As I said the alcmtr.exe was not related to the spam.

You didn’t answer the firewall question, a firewall is an essential element of your security. The undetected trojan spambot you have may well have been downloaded by another application on your system. Without a good firewall it is hard to get clean as quickly as you get rid of something there could be more of the same downloaded.

You need to update Sun Java as you are running is out of date. Get the latest version, once you have done this, uninstall all older versions from Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

You also have some remnants of Symantec products (O23 entries), what is it or was it from symantec you had installed ?

Other than the above I don’t see anything obvious, so it may be that you have some stealthed/hidden stuff on your system.

Also see, anti-rootkit, detection, removal & protection http://www.antirootkit.com/software/index.htm.

Sorry, unfortunately this virus isnt actually on my computer, its on my parents back home. I’ll look into putting on a firewall, any good (free) suggestions? Ive used zone alarm before while it was good, it seems like it may be a little much for my parents. Symantec was the anti virus they were using previously. Apparently when they first got (by reading an email entitled “A Friend has sent you a postcard”) the virus they mentioned stormworm, if thats any help. Ill update Java now and try black light, and get back to you. Much appreciated for all the help.

OK, just finished scanning for hidden/stealth programs using BlackLight and it has found these 2:

windev-19e3-51c0.sys
windev-peers.ini

Any idea if these 2 are causing the problem?
Thanks

They are them Combofix will kill them

Download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

[*]Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
[*]When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix’s window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Zone Alarm free although not the best has one of the more friendly user interfaces and since you have used it before would make it easier for you to educate your parents, there are others, such as, Comodo, PCTools Firewall Plus, Jetico, etc.

See some firewall tests for comparison, some are freeware but many are paid for versions http://www.firewallleaktester.com/tests.php. Also see http://www.thefreecountry.com/security/firewalls.shtml
Also see http://www.matousec.com/projects/windows-personal-firewall-analysis/leak-tests-results.php later set of results

If you know what one and version etc, we may be able to suggest a removal tool to ensure all remnants are gone.

[/quote]
There are a lot of these social engineering type emails designed to get you curious and either open an attached email or click on a link, you have to make them aware don’t open attachments or click links in unsolicited email. Even if this email appears to come from a friend, this can be forged, confirm the origin, if in doubt have them delete it, losing an email is preferable to getting infected.

Hopefully you will be on the road to recovery since these have been found and essexboy has joined the party. The combofix tool is powerful and he is very adept in its use.

Right the messages dont appear anymore, so i assume it has been removed? I removed them with Panda rootkit Cleaner but ran combofix anyway, heres the log for hijack this:
Many thanks

Lets not forget to send undetected samples to avast before killing them.

Send the sample to virus@avast.com zipped and password protected with password in email body and false positive/undetected malware in the subject.

Or you can also add the file to the User Files (File, Add) section of the avast chest where it can do no harm and send it from there (select the file, right click, email to Alwil Software). No need to zip and PW protect when the sample is sent from chest. A copy of the file/s will remain in the original location, so any further action you take can remove that (e.g. OTMoveIt.exe that essexboy mentioned).

right ive uploaded it, and have killed it. Im just waiting for the results to be emailed to me and ill post them here. Here is the hijack this log and the moveit thingy

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\pkjssnpvvpga.sys moved successfully.

Your HJT log analysis… http://www.wikifortio.com/710489/knockedeye.html

You aren’t normally contacted unless they require more information.

I don’t see anything obvious in your HJT log, though I also don’t see a firewall yet, this is essential and without one that provides outbound protection you could easily be reinfected. You still have the symantec entries.

Their system was down, it said i was 1030 in the queue and i could keep waiting 2 minutes at a time, or they would email me the results, so i asked for the results to be emailed to me. Havent put the firewall on yet or removed the symantec stuff as im just waiting on my parents decision in regards to the firewall and then it will all be sorted! Thanks.
