I am running Avast 4.8 Home Edition under Win XP-Pro SP-3.
I ran a scan last night and came up with a large “unable to scan” list. I clicked somewhere and lost access to it. Perhaps there is a log file that contains it?
I tried to select and copy the list but could not see how to do it.
My memory tells me that there were a lot of *.dat files under My Documents. When I look for them using ZTree I do not find any. That I why I would like to have a copy of the list that I can paste into Word to examine at my leisure, perhaps to create a tab delimited copy that I can then paste into Excel and sort.
Is it possible to obtain a copy of the “unable to scan” list?
Files that can’t be scanned are just that, not an indication they are suspicious/infected, just unable to be scanned.
Many programs (usually security based ones) password protect their files for legitimate reasons such as AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy, there are others (and avast doesn’t know the password or have any way of using it even if it did know it).
When you run scans with the above programs and you delete harmful entries that they detect, a copy is kept (in quarantine/restore/backup) in case you need to reverse what you did. These are usually password protected, you should do some housekeeping and delete old backup/recovery/quarantine entries (older than two weeks or so), this will reduce the numbers of files that can’t be scanned.
By examining 1) the reason given by avast! for not being able to scan the files, 2) the location of the files, you can get an idea of what program they relate to. You may need to expand the column headings to see all the text.
If you can give some examples of those file names, the locations and reason given why it can’t be scanned might help us further ?
The unable to scan list is only available during that Simple User Interface (SUI) on-demand scan session, once you clocs that window and the SUI, it is discarded in the Home version.
Appreciate the reply.
It did look like an adaware exe. If they are adaware, which I do not have anymore should I delete them? Will it effect my computer? Also, how do you expand the display so you can read all the results?
PS-I am using Pro.
First, make sure the log window is full screen. Next, you will see that the columns have divisions in between the column titles. Click and hold the left mouse button down on one of these line divisions in the title bar. When you do this, you should see that the cursor has changed to a double pointed arrow.
Move the mouse right to expand the column.
Moving the mouse left while doing this causes the column divisions to become smaller.
