Please make sure that your computer doesn’t have any other security software in it.It is not recommended to have more than one security software in the computer at the same time. It will cause conflicts in your computer which will seriously compromise your computer’s performance. Hope you got our point.

You are correct, the free version does not have a firewall.

You could go to Settings>Troubleshooting and temporarily disable the Avast self-defense module, then disable and stop the Avast service and restart. If it shuts down okay, turn everything back on and try it again. That should tell you if it’s Avast.
