Could this be a Virus?

Hello all,

I’m afraid I might have some type of virus and am uncertain what to do. I have run Super Anti Spyware, Mawarebytes Anti-Malware and Avast and nothing. (did a Boot up scan as well with no result)
The issue is that when I connect to the internet I see (via Network and Sharing Center) that I am downloading something (what, I don’t know) and it’s a consistent download as it goes a bit beyond 20MB (it stopped after 30MB). My problem is that It’s not a windows update (as far as I can see) nor is any other program that I know to be updating. I used TCP View to see what’s going on and Found something called Limelight being behind the problem as it is the only thing on the list that is working, the rest are listening only. Here is a snapshot.

So what could it be. Please help

Maybe not a virus but rather an Adware, download Ad-Aware and PC Tools Firewall and thus be more secure. And if the misterius download continues, when finished scan in www.virustotal.com.

Good luck!!!

Hello malberto,

Thank you for the reply but I think that if Super Anti Spyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware didn’t pick up anything, Ad-Aware is not going to be more likely to discover something. The download has stopped but I still don’t know what it was for.

Also, for the forum veterans, if I’m asking this question in the wrong forum section please tell me so.

Regards.

I suggest you contact Limelight Networks through the information as shown in your image above.

What I can say is that www.godaddy.com seems to be a legitimate site…

Hi Guys,

Thank you for the replies. Well I think I might have a solution to what this is but it’s only in theory.

First thing, the issue of LimeLight networks. According to Wikipedia this is a legitimate Content Delivery Network (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limelight_Networks)

Second thing, a few days after having noticed the download, I did a Live Messenger update (kept getting a notice every time I signed in that a new version was available). Now this update was supposed to do a download of 65-66MB however this was not done (at least it didn’t show up in my network status nor did I see my modem showing any activity)

Third thing, one of the programs using limelight is Windows Update. Supposing that this is true and taking into account the second observation (as well as the likelihood that Live Messenger could use the same service) I am somewhat certain that the download was done by Live Messenger even though it was not started (I am not certain about this last point since I didn’t look at processes, but only at what TCPview was showing me).

Sorry for wasting time. I should have realized that if SAS, MBAM and Avast did not detect anything that there wasn’t anything to worry about.

Cheers.
