Crash during CD burn when Avast 4.8 enabled

I recently upgraded from Avast 4.7 to 4.8.

A few days later I attempted to burn a CD using Nero 6 (this has worked fine many times in the past).
My PC crashed completely at the start of the burn process (Critical Error, blue screen, restart).
I tried again after reboot - same result.
Thinking that it might be related to Nero, I upgraded to the latest Nero 8.
I got the same problem.
Next I tried using Pinnacle Instant Write instead of Nero - again the same problem.
I started to think that it might be a fault with the DVD writer or the driver software - even though these had been working fine and the configuration had not changed.

After reboot, I tried clicking the ‘Send Error Report’ to Microsoft.
This took me to a web page that suggested the problem could be related to antivirus software.
So I tried disabling Avast.
This seemed to do the trick - I can now burn CDs again.

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

I’m running Windows XP Professional + SP2.
DVD burner is a Sony DW-U18A.

Do you have any recent files in Windows\Minidump folder?

I recorded the Stop error codes but don’t have access to the information at the moment.
I will post an update later this week with the details.

If I can’t find the dump file I’m pretty sure I can recreate the problem and generate a new one.
If I get time at the weekend, I will try reverting back to Avast 4.7 to see if the problem goes away.

Ok - I tried the same thing on a completely different PC running Avast 4.8 and got the same problem…

I used Pinnacle Instant Write.
I simply dragged some files to burn onto the Pinnacle icon.
Up pops a window asking to insert a blank CD.
As soon as I close the CD drawer the PC crashes and restarts.

Here are the error codes after restart:-

BCCode : 1000008e BCP1 : C0000005 BCP2 : 806EE753 BCP3 : 848343E0
BCP4 : 00000000 OSVer : 5_1_2600 SP : 2_0 Product : 768_1

I have attached the Minidump file (renamed to .txt - hope that works!)

Can you please send it by e-mail to Vlk’s address… I’m afraid attaching it as .txt might have corrupted the file.
Thanks!

Ok - will do.

Just tried looking at the dump myself using WinDbg.
It looks like the culprit is aswmon2.sys - possibly an unhandled exception?

Hi Brian,

please try updating to the 4.8.1187 pre-release build and see if that resolves the problem.

Hi all.
I have similar problems with my CD-Writer, my Avast version is 4.8 1201. When I have to write files to CD I have to disable the Avast scanner. I also have problems recognizing discs in the CD/DVD ROM to read discs.

Any suggestions I can do or try to fix the problem.

Greetings Frans

BTW; I do have three files in the mindump directory and I also use Pinnacle Instant CD/DVD 8306.

You can either send to his Vlk’s address vlk(at)avast.com (if it’s smaller than e.g. 1 MB, ZIPed), or upload to ftp://ftp.avast.com/incoming
And provide a link to this thread

Hi Tech.

Any news on my CD Writer problem, after analysing the minidump files, that you should have received a few days ago.

Best regards

You seem to have sent the dumps to Vlk… I’m an user like you, not able to analyze dumps. Hope he could help.

Hi VLK,

Any news on analyzing the files I sent you some time ago.

Best regards

Brian_mk & fvd,

Your reported problems made me test my CD/DVD burning with Avast! 4.8 fully functioning.

Using CDBurnerXP (3.0.116 ) on my Pioneer 110D - no problems creating R & RW Data CDs.

I stopped using my (paid for) Nero7 ages ago since I do not need all the bells and whistles, and was a pain trying to create bootable CDs,
which CDBurnerXP does quite reliably since it has its own image file.

A google search show that many people have problems with Pinacle but none relate this to AV software.
e.g http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pinnacle-Instant-CD-DVD-8-0/dp/B0000DKKV7

Otherwise, Avast! is working flawlessly for me at the moment

  • please do not break it trying to accommodate another unreliable application.

Maurice.
P.S. I would have thought that many would consider it good practice to disable other apps during CD/DVD burning.

I had this issue just after I moved from AVG to AVAST with the Roxio that was included in my OS. I then found DeepBurner and have not had crash one. I checked the CPU usage just before the final crash and it was 100% on the CPU and 100% of my installed RAM/PF Usage with Roxio. I did a similar test using DeepBurner, the highest point after the burn started was 50% CPU and 10% on RAM/PF Usage. I had a copy of Nero 8 from when I bought a DVD-R/RW and installed it. The Nero results matched the Roxio usage results. Make sue you have a small burning program or you will find that the burn has caused a crash and reboot.

It’s been 18months since I reported the unhandled exception fault in asw2mon.sys.
Has anything been done to fix it?

I still have to disable Avast before burning CDs for avoid a complete system crash.
I am running Version 4.8.1229

@brian_mk

You are using a down level avast! as it should be Build: Sept 2009 (4.8.1356)

Go to the avast! icon in the toolbar then right click then Updating then Program Update.

Or download the complete English (37.82 MB) package:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

Have you updated XP to SP3 yet?

Windows XP Service Pack 3 has been available for over a year and provides many Critical Updates plus performance improvements.

You need to start Internet Explorer then go to Tools then Windows Update and download all of the available updates.

Also you should enable Automatic Updates or at least be notified that Updates are available.

Go to Control Panel then Automatic Updates then select Automatic (recommended) or at least Notify me but don’t automatically download or install them.

Go to Secunia Online Software Inspector then run it to see what other applications are vulnerable:
