Almost a year ago I subscribed to CrashPlan Home version (it’s a backup software). It worked well for a few months, then, almost overnight, it stopped working. The error returned is “Unable to connetc, check the network.”
I immediately wrote to their support. I made many tests with their support, but all in vain. I tried:
restart the “CrashPlanService.exe” process
uninstall and reintall the entire software
I launched some telnet commands (ask if you need some details here)
I disabled my antivirus (Avast Free) and my firewall (ZoneAlarm) and then tryed to restart/reconnect CrashPlan
I allowed CrashPlan “to do everything” in my firewall settings.
The last Support’s advice was whitelisting the address * .crashplan.com. But I did it in my firewall. Maybe I have to do it in Windows? Or in Avast?
Windows 7 has its own firewall.
Is it enabled or disabled ?
ZoneAlarm is not just a firewall anymore.
Unless you are using a real old version, there can be a conflict between ZA, avast and/or the windows firewall/av
A thing to check is avast, ZA and windows log files to see if any of them mention anything about CrashPlan (or part of it).
thank you very much for thw quick response - I’m sorry for my late one! So…
Windows 7 Firewall
Is disabled (or - at almost - I think! see image attached).
Avast Logs:
With a text search in Avast logs folder (C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log) I’ve found some matching text in aswAr.log file, but I think it has nothing to do with errors: avast! Antirootkit, version 1.0

ZoneAlarm logs
Inside the logs folder (C:\ProgramData\CheckPoint\ZoneAlarm\Logs) I’ve found lots of rows inside many files that refer to CrashPlan but nothing to do with errors.
I hope to have good news for you, but first a little information.
Stop thinking, the windows firewall is indeed disabled and that is good.
No need to have multiple software firewalls running
aswAr.log is created by the (as you can see at the top), the avast rootkit scanner.
Unfortunately I don’t have a list with the status codes so I can’t tell you what 2532 and 4832 mean.
I believe the rootkit scanner has detected alternate data-streams created by CrashPlan. (don’t take my word for it)
Now something that could solve the problem.
Add crashplan to the exclusion list in avast.
If you use their online storage (and/or what they call “a trusted computer”), start with adding it in the webshield settings and check if the problem is solved.
If not, add a exclusion to the general exclusion list in avast.
