I understand from reading some of the (fairly) recent support FAQs that Avast entered the Credit Protection business last year. After this most recent Avast update to version 7.0.1473, I no longer see the option to disable the Credit Monitoring service. I can uncheck the box in the Support-Maintenance section that says “Do Not Display Alerts”, but according to the CreditAlert section, the credit is still being monitored. Two questions…
How to stop having my and my wife’s credit monitored. Where is the setting for totally, permanently deactivating this feature? AVAST is an excellent anti-virus program that our family has used for many years…and that is ALL I want it to be.
How can Avast monitor our credit when they have no information on the Avast Free user, other than our name and e-mail address?
I’ve searched the forum for answers, but the Credit Alert service is rarely referenced. Maybe noone but me cares about how the internals of this feature works? With Halloween coming next week, the lack of information on something that is mysteriously intruding into the finances of Avast customers is a bit “CREEPY” to say the least.
avast! doesn’t monitor anything for real itself - it’s an interface to a 3rd party company and avast! only reports if any change has occurred.
If you want to do the monitoring, you need to supply your social security number (during the registration) which makes it possible to access the relevant data. If you haven’t done that, there’s no monitoring going on, because there can’t be any.
Mr. Igor, Thank-you for letting me know that even though AVAST “says” that it’s monitoring my credit for changes, it really isn’t, because I’ve never supplied my social security number. That’s very reassuring. I was beginning to think that the program had somehow scoured the internet and learned all about me! :o
At any rate, it’s strange that on my computer, which is still running Avast version 7.0.1466, there is no reference to the Credit Monitoring. However, I updated my wife’s PC to the latest AVAST version yesterday, which installed the Credit related settings that caused me to start this thread. I suppose I’ll go ahead and update my AVAST to the latest version too. I’ll have to do it eventually… At least you’ve removed my concern about un-authorized Credit Monitoring. Thanks again Igor.

P.S… In the 7 years we’ve used AVAST our home computers have NEVER become infected. We’ve only had a handful of “attacks”, but AVAST has successfully blocked each one. Truly an AMAZING virus protection program! Am thinking about disabling Windows Defender. Downloads Gigabytes of updates every month and consumes resources. Why have Defender when you have AVAST?
