I’m running Avast5 Free AV and having no problems whatsoever. FYI, we turn off our PC every night. Recently Avast has taken to no longer executing the pleasant sound “VIRUS DATABASE HAS BEEN UPDATED” (not sure why that stopped). Avast does tell me when it has completed scheduled scans, however. Windows makes all the normal sounds for appropriate events as well, so no problems with sound. When I noticed this sound’s absence, I started checking the Avast GUI Maintenance/updates screen to be sure the software was really updating daily. Which proved to be true (or at least I think it is)! The Avast GUI update screen however, showed Avast updated at 2AM or 3AM, when the CPU is SHUTDOWN/OFF! Now I know Avast is good and the Alwil developers are creative, but I don’t see how Avast can get updates when my desktop is OFF. And I’ve not added any tasks to Task Scheduler relating to Avast, nor checked therein any boxes to “Wake up my pc” for anything. Not sure I even know exactly how to do that anyway, just know it can be done from reading on Win7 forums.
Can any of you folks shed light on this subject for me?
Have you checked the avast settings to ensure you haven’t somehow disabled it (avastUI Settings, Updates, Details, click the inverted triangle to expand the details, show notification after automatic update. If that is off the sounds would also be off.
I think you are looking at when avast released the update, not when you actually got it as that is different, see image.
Hmmmm. You’re right, David. I WAS indeed looking at the Updates screen and inferring this date meant the time it updated. Now I know to looking to the Settings, Updates screen area instead. I had seen that updates details page before, too. Odd.
And you were right on the second issue as well. Somehow the “Show Notification Box After Automatic Update” was indeed unticked. Since I’m, one of those Avast users who like to hear this voice each morning, I didn’t think I myself had ever unticked this item). But obviously I did if being checked is the default. Strange. Anyway, now that friendly voice will be joining me for coffee in the morning once again. Thanks.
