Hey. Was using a friends laptop n noiced i couldnt access any internet options or security centre or alt+ctrl+del. Downloaded spybot n ran it, it found heaps which it fixed and got the rest on restart. Then security centre kicked in and told me she had no av, so i put avast on n did boot time scan it got heaps of stuff which i put in the chest. System running much better, i suspect a few more small problems, but 1st… because whatever she had had disabled all security stuff, windows update wont run (i think files are missing) also avast wont recieve virus database updates, it tries but just wont do it. I’ve reconfigured the sp2 firewall but still no avail. Any suggestions?
Try disabling the firewall completely and run a manual update. if that does not work post the exact error message that the avast update gives you
as for windows update make sure you run it from IE as that is the only supported browser
Cheers mac- ur advice re avast update works, but am i to do this everytime i want to update?
Also, can do updates from windows update website, its automatic updates that no longer works.
Should i do a HJT at geeks to go maybe?
You need to know the exactly error message (or the number of error). We can help after that.
Windows XP SP2 won’t block avast updates. It just check inbound connections and not the outbound.
XP firewall shouldn’t be blocking the avast update.
Basically, check:
-
If the servers.def file is corrupt or 0KB (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def).
You can try and download the servers.def file, http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def and replace the one in the avast setup folder. -
If your subscription allows the update right now (i.e., if it is not expired).
I hope you haven’t bought a license from a site on this list: http://www.avast.com/eng/fraudulent-sales-of-avast-products.html -
Check your proxy settings into avast!:
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy
Make sure your browser is not set to “Work Offline” (this option is generally in the File menu).
If it doesn’t help, try switching from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” (I’m assuming you’re not connecting to the Internet via proxy).
You can run proxycfg -d in a DOS window to make your computer connect direct, without proxy. You can run proxycfg -h for help. -
Is there any error message on avast logs?
Hello again most helpful Tech!, ;D
My mistake. I can get windows update to run, its the automatic updates that wont run at all, even the notification icons wont come up.
The server.def file looks ok at 12.0kb.
I downloaded avast from a pc magazine disc n got mr reg emailed from avast, so pretty sure thats all good.
Proxy stuff all seems ok too,
There are no errors in any avast logs, its all very confusing.
I think there was still possibly some traces of malware on system thats interfered with install. I’m going to try running spybot & AVG again, delete avast chest files, and do a clean install.
I suppose you’re not running AVG and avast at the same time in the same computer…
Clean install will be good to test 8)
Oh, please, download the last setup.exe file from avast website.
Old setup are not working on updates anymore. I’m not sure how old is your PC Magazine version…
Tech since he said “spybot & AVG” maybe he is referring to AVG Anti-Spyware
pandammonia, If disabling the windows firewall worked then you just need to figure out how to unblock it.
Try this:
In the control panel click the windows firewall icon and then choose the exceptions tab and add the avast updater to the list.
Tech and Mac-
Yes sorry, i did mean avg anti-spyware. The pc mag edition was latest issue, but just did a clean install anyway, after resetting the windows firewall to default, and now all is working fine.
However one more questions, different subject. On the laptop im on, in the metwork connections tab, there is a new section called incoming - incoming connections. As ive never seen this before on any pc im a little concerned as i just recently removed a ton of viruses/trojans/malware from it/
Please, consider uninstall / boot / install avast again / boot…
never seen this, can you post a screenshot
