I am a newbie and and for a few days now I have been getting DCOM exploit and lasser attack blocked messages from avast. That didn´t bother me too much because the attempts were foiled. But at the same time another problem popped up and that´s more annoying. After I get the first DCOM exploit attack message my pc sort of freezes. I can´t start any new programm after this point but programms that were already running before that point continue to work fine. I can´t even shut down my pc the usual way but have to do a reset. After the reset my pc works fine again till the next DCOM exploit message. Then it´s the same story all over again.
I ran a virus scan which turned out negative. I also used ad aware, just in case. I ran the Microsoft baseline security analyzer and installed the recommended security updates.( not sp2, can´t) I googled the DCOM exploit problem but couldn´t find anything that describes the problem that I am experiencing, but it must be related to the DCOM problem anything else would be too much of a coincidence. So here I am looking for help and advice!
Hello zaschanico, avast! Network Shield provider, which scans network traffic on particular ports and when someone tries to attack your computer with DCOM exploits (someone infected with e.g. Win32/Blaster virus) it blocks these packets and your system will not receive them. Since I don’t know how the provider could affect your system so I don’t blame the provider. However, you can try to STOP the provider only if you were using a firewall or you installed security updates (this tool http://www.grc.com/freeware/dcom.htm checks if your computer was DCOM vulnerable). See if there’re any changes and please let us know.
Also, the provider protects your computer from LSASS exploit (e.g. Win32/Sasser virus).
Thanks for your advice!
Since yesterday the problem has escalated. I did a reset to be able to shut down my pc properly, it rebooted but after a few seconds it rebooted again…a vicious circle. I think I need a professional to look at this.
It will be really good if you update your Windows installation to XP SP2 and more.
A good firewall won’t be bad too.
DCOM attacks reveals poor software updating and poor firewall protection.
