Why do you want to do so?
You can right click the icon on system tray and avast! shields control…
Thank you for your reply.
Right clicking on the icon in the system tray brings up a pop up window with 10 options, none of which allow temporary deactivation.
When I install certain graphic or cad programs, the instructions are to temporarily deactivate any virus protection program before starting installation.

Right click the avast ball then scroll over avast shields control - there will be your disable options.
Do these programs state why you should do that…?? ???
As that’s usually not necessary.
I get pretty suspicious when asked to do this as I have to wonder what it is that they are doing that would be so suspect to AVs that they you want disable your protection at the very time it is needed most, installing applications.
This used to be common place many years ago, very many years ago, in essence there should be very few instances when this might be necessary and this should be clearly stated why. Those instances are usually related to other security tools.
The licensing of some software requires being able to allow an outside computer access to yours. Virus protection software will block that from happening.
I don’t see why that would be the case, as avast allows remote access to the system, usually used for support. There is even has Remote Assistance built in to avast7 so a user can’t help a friend resolve a problem, etc.
So avast7 is pretty familiar with remote access.

2)Virus protection software will block that from happening.
Any program that can’t get along with your Anti Virus program is either very poorly written or has something to hide.
I’ve used avast for 9 years (wow) and have never turned it off to run a program. (Never will either)
As Para-Noid already mentioned, blocking connections is the job of your firewall not your Anti Virus program.

No. Antivirus will block malware only. Firewall is not present in avast! free.
