Dear Avast,

I love you. No, seriously. I. Love. You. Let me explain.

I’m not a techy, but I know my way somewhat around computers. I have 3 computers, the newest being one I bought for a song from my local library which was upgrading. The hard drive had been wiped clean except for the operating system and a few other apps that I got rid of. Then I set it up and started doing what I enjoy most in all the world; researching genealogy. Seriously, I sit at this computer for hours and stalk dead people. My family tree has more than 23,000 people in it, not all related to me, of course. So I am very busy on the computer every single day. I also have my own domain and two websites, one dedicated to just genealogy, and a blog.

I got this library computer in May and at first everything was grand. Then, within the last month and half, it started doing odd things, like the hard drive was constantly being written to. I tried everything I could to figure it out, but was clueless. At first it only happened once a day, so I would just close out everything I was working on and go clean the house or something. Then it started doing it twice a day. Irritating, but still somewhat tolerable. After some Google searching, I switched browsers to Firefox and that cured the problem for, like, two days. Then it started up again with a vengeance. It got to the point where every single time I was online, the computer would basically freeze while the hard drive would work madly. Never could I figure out what was causing it. I downloaded a competitor’s antivirus software and it worked for about 3 hours. But it still wouldn’t let me see what was actually going on. Then something shut down the software and I couldn’t restart it.

After talking to my youngest son, he advised me to get Avast. I figured it couldn’t hurt, so I unistalled the other program and downloaded your product.

Oh. My. Gosh.

I did this last night, staying up until 3 in the morning, then went to sleep. I set it to run a scan while I was sleeping and it complied, telling me this morning there were no viruses. Everything was fine until about 10 am this morning when something shut Avast down. Using your excellent utilities, I was able to block several programs that seemed to be a problem and was able to trace an IP address where suspicious activity seemed to originate.

I have been online now for several hours and have not had the problem happen since. While I don’t know exactly what the cause of the problem is, I know exactly how I stopped it, and it was your software that allowed me to do so.

Thank you. You will forever have my undying gratitude.

i recomend additional check by Essexboy …

Are you experiencing any problems at all ?

It’s funny, but I was experiencing the same the-hard-drive-is-working-on-I-don’t-know-what, slowing down my computer when I received the notification that there was a reply to my post. Fighting the freeze, I followed the directions given to me in that reply, and then couldn’t tell if the computer was busy doing what I was doing to it myself, or if it was something else. Now, after two reboots, I’m fine. Computer’s fast as it was when I first got it, I’m not having any issues at all…well, except that I had to log back into all my favorite sites again. Small price to pay, I say.

I can’t thank you enough. I’m very happy.

As it is a refurb you do have a multitude of ancient Java on it which is a major security loophole

Subject to no further problems

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so…The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Remove tools

Download and run Delfix
Select the options as shown

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/delfix.JPG

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java
See this article

I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

If you do need to keep Java then download JavaRa
Run the programme and select Remove Java Runtime. Uninstall all versions of Java present
Once done then run it again and select Update Java runtime > Download and install Latest version

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/73555776/javara.JPG

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Unchecky

Click on the link above to be taken to Unchecky.com
click the very large Download button.
click Save
Click Open folder
Right click on the Unchecky_setup and choose to Run as Administrator
Once open click the Install button.
Then click on Finish
Unchecky is now installed and will help you keep unwanted check boxes unchecked, this is a fire and forget programme

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated.

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read this little guide Best security practices Keep safe

Oops, now what?

OK ignore that as you probably have a bad download
