decompression bomb

Hello! I downloaded a movie a while ago. It contained a Iso file if dont remember wrong. I loaded it over to my new external harddrive and tried to start it with alchohol 120%. It did not start. After some time (the same day) the harddrive was going slower and slower. I checked it with avast, and I got the message that the movie was a decompression bomb. I could not delete the files. Now the harddrive has stopped completely. I can not connect it too my computer any longer. I just want to get the harddrive formatted, but I dont know how as long as I cant get to it thru my computer… Can U folks please help me?

“compression bomb” only means that the file is a big archives needing to be decompressed to be scanned. And when it’s too big and would take too much time to decompress and allow a scan by avast, then avast tells you it’s a decompression bomb. Nothing to do with malware (it just couldn’t be scanned).
Now your saying you couldn’t delete the file, your hard drive stopped working… no idea, I don’t know where you got the file from, could contain malware, anyway Avast can’t say it unless you decompress it yourself manually and then scan it. But it seems impossible now as you can’t even access the disk. I think you had a hard disk failure.

Oh yeah, you’re mentioning alcohol 120% which means you needed that to read/play the iso…on a virtual drive…I guess you downloaded the movie from an illegal source ::slight_smile: (alcohol doesn’t have any other purpose but allowing pirated content to be executed).
