I have been having weird problems with my pc. I spent hours with a tech in India, he said everything is now fine, but I beg to differ. There are 2 icons on my desktop that are grey and have a gear looking thing on them…the tech said those were virus’s that cannot be removed ?!? I also found 4 of those same things in my pictures file yesterday. So…I ran a boot scan and it came up with 3 decompression bombs. Now I understand that for the most part, those are just large files that are unpacked (did I get that right?). However, in reading the posts, I noticed one person was advised to delete that file. Since I am having problems, I am thinking that maybe one of these bombs are to blame?? They are as follows:
Also…If those greyed out gear icons on my desktop and in my pictures file were virus’s, why didn’t my Avast program find them??? The India tech told me they cannot be removed. Help me please. I am having intermittment problems with start up and logging off.
I won’t get into the virus removal issue, as there are other forum members much more adequate for that.
About he path with the decompression bomb, if you are actually using avast (which you don’t really said), then you should uninstall and run the respective removal utility for other resident antivirus tools, like those from symantec. Any remnants of other antivirus tools may conflict with avast, even after those other tools were already uninstalled, so the adequate removal utility is recommended.
If you are not using avast, then all this is useless as you are posting in the avast general forum (and not in the Viruses and Worms subforum).
I am using Advast. I spent hours on the phone with a tech in India who did all the uninstalling stuff that you are talking about. So, if I understand what you said correctly, the first decompression bomb that says it’s the symantec tempory file, that should be uninstalled. I assumed that all of that was uninstalled last week when the tech took over my computer and did it for me. I’m not really all that computer savy, so I don’t know what an adequate removal utility is. Can you recommend??? And thank you for your assistance.
dosdee, don’t worry and, specially, don’t pay anything regaring to these files.
If you do not have any Symantec program anymore, you could delete the files.
The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton products from your computer.
(If possible) Remove Symantec products through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
