Deepscreen makes some executables unresponsive

Hello *,
So, Avast has some nasty side affects when DeepScreen is switched on, some applications get frozen upon execution, apps that worked just fine until recently. Even apps that I’ve compiled myself.
As you can imagine, was thoroughly annoyed until I’ve discovered Avast DeepScreen was to blame.
The issue is not as “minor” as it may look at first glance as to recover I have to reboot PC because the program which is unresponsive cannot be killed, suspended or anything… And the best part is that it’s parent process also gets stuck with same symptoms.
Now think about having to reboot PC each time you accidentally run your freshly compiled app from within IDE…

Latest version of Win7 x64 pro, latest version of Avast Free (auto-update on both).

I’ve switched off the DeepScreen and now my PC works as expected

Any hints, ideas? Willing to provide details if required…

Edit: added some clarification to Win and Avast versions

are there any alert messages from avast?

you can try uploading the problem files to avast using one of these options
also write down your problem / give link to this topic

I reported a similar issue back in November for the commercial “Family Tree Maker” program…would not run unless DeepScreen was disabled.

I have not seen a fix yet.

Pardon my curiousity, but did you receive a reply/acknowledgement to your report/submission?

I did not.

To be fair, I posted on the forum, but did not submit a support ticket.

Ah OK, thnx.
Only curious as the ‘Deep Screen Technology’ is new in Avast and I’m sure the devs must be monitoring/Flagging any issues/Program recognition problems, that might be occurring.

If you didn’t submit a ticket, and there was no reply from a developer to your post, then it possibly isn’t being looked at.

Yup.

I had some issues with Deepscreen at first, where it would freeze during the initial examination period without displaying any pop ups at all. That all disappeared after I did a clean out and a new installation of Avast, and it now works quite well.

I use quite a bit of portable apps software (some of which is unsigned) run from a USB flash drive. The first time I run some of these applications Deepscreen grabs it and does its examination, with an appropriate notification. Once it is satisfied, it restarts the application and automatically inserts an exception, so from then on the application runs normally.

True that…

Since I was able to resolve it and the client was happy, it was more of a post-mortem report on the issue.

Avast is usually pretty good about reading forum posts, so I left it at that.

Hi,
so to answer your questions.
No, no real message from Avast, apart from affected app window having sort of blueish “DeepScreen” label on top of it, but I do not observe it always, only seldom.
Affected files are not quarantined, so nothing in chest.
I’ve sent a message to Avast guys using contact form. I’ve included a link to this post.

Did you upload the file(s) as directed by Pondus? ???
Doing so will assist avast in making their determination as to the safety of the files.

You should see popups at the start and finish of the process, as per the attached screen shots.

@olddog
These screens never popped up.

@Para-Noid
Yes I’ve included one executable, but I somehow doubt that the executables themselves are the issue here, rather the implementation of the DeepScreen itself.
Things go wrong with new tech

kfranic,
I experienced problems with deepscreen not bringing up the popups, and effectively freezing when I first updated Avast from v8 to v9 (2014), with the update done through the program.

I uninstalled avast, ran AvastClear.exe and also RajZor’s clean up tool and then did a clean install of Avast.
I have had no problems with deepscreen since then. That may or may not work in your case, but as the whole process can be done quite quickly, it’s probably worth a try.

Can I ask whether the compiled programs that are currently having deepscreen issues require internet access themselves, or are they just running as local applications?

Just would like to add that the problem like above still isn’t fixed.
People don’t even reply to the thread I started myself.
