This keeps spamming my system logs on OS X Lion. All I am doing is installing rails

Looks like something has deleted the temporary directory of the webshield located in /tmp or /tmp self. The webshield will recreate the directory, when it restarted. So either let it restart using something as:

kill `ps -e | grep com.avast.proxy | grep -v grep | cut -d' ' -f1`

run as root from the terminal, or simply restart your machine.
