Say I have to reinstall avast 5 is there anyway I can save the definitions from the avast 5 I uninstalled and use them in the new avast 5 that I just reinstalled? That way I don’t have to redownload the definitions all over again.
you can but i dont think it will work, but restoring viruses into chest is possible by copying the chest folder to a place then restore it to its original place after repairing
If you reinstalled avast5, from a full installation then it should be pretty well up to date as far as virus database is concerned so a manual virus signatures and engine update from the UI should not be very big. Even if this was from the original release 5.0.377 or 5.0.396.
Yes, I know that all I what to know is can this be done and if it can will it work?
It used to be able to be don in 4.8, by copying the 400.vps file, but version 5.0 has a completely different method for the virus signature updates (doesn’t have a 400.vps) and is more complex with more files involved (don’t know them all either) as I believe the vps is no longer compressed to speed scans.
Even with 4.8 it wasn’t straight forward having to disable the self-defence module.
So I know of no solution in 5.0.
