Hi debra,

Any ā€œunpā€¦ā€ files in that directory are just temp files which avast unpacked in the process of scanning archive files. Normally they get automatically deleted afterwards, but possibly your scan was aborted ā€“ feel free to delete it yourself.

Maybe itā€™s not necessary, but Iā€™ve gotten into the habit of pausing avastā€™s Standard shield while running defrag, Maybe thereā€™s no conflicts, but if nothing else it might help the defrag run a little faster and smoother. Donā€™t forget to Resume it afterwards, of course.

Unrelated to avast, if you happen to also have Javacoolā€™s SpywareGuard, itā€™s recommended that you disable its protections (save new settings that way) and then exit the program before defragging because of reported conflicts with defrag. Donā€™t forget to restart it and set the protections active again (and save settings again) afterwards.

Hopefully this will help clear up your problems.

Best,
Mike

Hi D4deb40 and welcome to this forum,
Are you sure to shut down all programs before defrag HDD ?

If you delete the temporary files before defragmenting you will have a better defragmentation and will get rid of this problem.
Of course, disabling avast will speed up the process

It will also help if you empty your recycle bin.

deb,

All of the above are good advice but the proper way to Defrag any system is to:

First" ā€œClean the registryā€.
BeClean is a very quick, and simple program which you can obtain from a web search.

Secondly: Once the registry is clean, then do a DiskScan which will detect and repair any disk error especially in the boot sector.

Thirdly: Shut down All programs except Systray and Explorer (if shown in the Close Program listā€¦Ctl/Alt/Delete brings up the menu)

Shut off all power saver settings and screensavers.

Now you can run Defrag.

Reboot the computer after it finishes.

Wawla!

Hi everyone,
just a quick note to say thank you for all the advices I recieved. Mike help me find a hidden file that was causing the problem. I am now able to defrag without any problems. I think my problem was created while gone and we had a power outage in the middle of a scan and then of course that created my headache. as for all the advices that was given I do do most of them and will make sure that i do what everyone said to make sure that i dontā€™ run into a problem.
thank you all again
