Defragmentation.

Sorry to post this again, but answers and help stopped comming. ::)Some suggestions I tried to use were not compatible with windows ME. and some were .zip files. no (unzipper) :-[. Scan disk ran fine “no errors found”. but then when I run Defrag (MS), it will not run right. example. disk content has changed, starts over and over and over, then says I have errors on disk, There were now errors when I ran Scandisk, and it ended. Right now when it tries to run it is showing things that are at the beginning of my disk, that belongs at the end ??? Is there a Defragmentor out there (free), other than (MS), and will work with windows ME? and won’t screw up my hdd. ? Thanks.

I got this from Tech’s - Links! (For almost anything) Sticky Post at the top of this forum:

Scroll down in the link to the HDD Defragmentation category.
Tech has there several Defragmenters.
Of course, I’ve never used any of them. You’d have to ask Tech as to how good and reliable they are.

I have used EndItAll2 for years on all versions of Windows from 95-> to kill background activity prior to defragmenting.

This offers a few suggestions that may help

Thanks to all !! ;D

Olddog, I have the error defrag00205, but there is an awful lot of files in that folder mentioned, and I would hate to delete something I shouldn’t. any further info. ???

::slight_smile:

EndItAll?

The only time I used ME, I felt that way too.

There are many folks complaining about Vista. I guess none of them ever used Windows ME ;D

Sorry I was so long getting back to you.
Here is a Microsoft article on defrag error 00205. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q238165/
The article doesn’t specifically mention ME, but I believe the situation is the same. My suggestion would be to delete the applog files as per the article, then reboot. Before trying to defrag again though, I would first run scan scan disk with a minimum amount of other items running and preferably using the selective startup procedure given in the first section of http://www.helpwithwindows.com/windowsMe/tip-0102.html

Only when scandisk has repaired any disk problems and is giving a completely clear scan would I try defrag again, and I would use the selective startup procedure to do that also.

Note that if you are running short on clear space on you drive, defrag may continue to have problems, and the only solution to that is to make some additional space by removing some of your data files from the disk.

Hope this helps

I’m one of them… I just see ME installed in computers from other persons.
I was using Windows 98 SE and 2000 at that time. Lucky me.

I like WinME but then I don’t do silly time wasting games.

I spent a very frustrating day yesterday trying to install the latest Ubuntu on my PIII 500MHZ 256MB RAM and twin 80MB SCSI hard drives system that runs ME quite well and it totally hosed the system.

I even tried it twice after reading the FAQ for problems.

It would run from the ISO CD but painfully slow. Upon reboot the system declared the dreaded
Non-system disk or disk error
Replace and strike any key when ready

The only cure was a FDISK to remove the boot partition then add the partition back and install ME which works fine except for the Soundblaster Audigy sound adapter that I have to find the drivers for on the very confusing Soundblaster site.

I’ll get it working and send the Ubuntu ISO CD to service as a coffee cup coaster with a big unhappy smilie on it :o

Thanks olddog, for your intelligent offerings !!.

windows Me and 95 and 98 and DOS
Norton Disk Doctor and Speedisk what’s not to like?
no BS

Ratz! :'(

I had the Soundblaster Live! adapter driver but somehow I have lost it and I can’t find it anywhere ???

The card indicates that it is model CT4830 but I can’t locate the driver at their site and all Google searches have not helped.

I tried Driverguide but they want me to register and I’m afraid that if I do I’ll leave myself open to spam.

Edit: Avast is the first update I did after a Windows Update and scandisk then defrag.
