Is there some way that a delay of a minute or two could be built into the next version for the component that updates the virus database? It seems poised to rush off the microsecond it can to do the update.
I’m already running a program to delay the loading of Stimon so that msgsrv32.exe can load effectively.
I get the sense that the update program sometimes does the same thing that Stimon did most of the time.
I know. I could shell out and buy a new computer so that I, too, could run xp or vista and not make ‘special requests’ for those of us still operating under Win98 SE2.
Sure, just change (or add) AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds value into the [InetWD] section of avast4.ini file.
You could set the number of seconds to wait before attempting to update. The default is 30 but it may not be enough in some DSL systems. In this case, you can try increasing this e.g. to 60 (1 minute). That should be enough.
More details here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=1647
You can make that adjustment by editing the “C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini” assuming you installed avast in the default location.
You need to edit the [InetWD] section of the avast4.ini file and add the following line (depending on your connection type enter one or other of the Bold lines below): Dial-up connections, add this line: RASWaitSeconds=120 Broadband connections, add this line: AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds=120
The figure is seconds and the above equates to two minutes, you could try that and adjust upwards if required, 180, 240, etc.
You follow the path that I have given, if you don’t see avast3.ini but only avast4 then you need to uncheck ‘Hide extensions for known types,’ in Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View, see image.
Laptop? :o
Sorry, it won’t work.
That is for permanent connections and not for dial-up. The update will be delayed only if you set your computer (laptop) as being permanent connected to Internet into avast settings.
David post both scenarios, dial-up and permanent connected:
I am running wireless off my cable modem and D-Link router. I believe the settings you gave me for permanent connection are the correct ones. Everytime I start my laptop it stalls out for an extended period of time and only straightens out when Avast! finally finishes it’s update.
Ok…
But as you’re not connected all the times, the dial-up will work too. 8)
avast checks if there is an available connection each 40 seconds.
If there isn’t, wait more 40 seconds to check. Checking does not take more than one second and, of course, does not use the Internet band.
If there is a connection, check for an update. If there is not any new file to download, wait 4 hours to start checking again. If there is an available update, start it and install it. Again, wait 4 hours to check the next time.
Some of this settings could be configurated different, I posted the default values of the avast4.ini file.
