Delete corrupted files...?

I have a corrupted file on my harddisk. is a file from the game GTA:SA… I couldn’'t run the game so i unintalled it… it left behind a file 900mb, tried to delete it but windows says that it has a CRC error… I can rename the folder but not the file… is there a program I can delete that file or recover it and then delete it? I tried the scandisk from My Computer but it says that it can’t proceed after phase1.

Harddisk:
40gb Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8
Windows XP SP2
NTFS Filesystem

Someone with more experience dealing with CRC errors may have more advice for you.

Have you tried deleting it in safe mode?

You might find MoveOnBoot useful. I’ve checked the Gibinsoft website and the free version is still available. It was clean when I got an older version some time ago; you may want to double-check.

Sometimes one of these could do the job:

del "\?\c:\path_to_the_file.extension "
(note the blank space at the end)

del \?\c:\path_to_the_file.extension

If Windows announce “CRC error”, the disk is probably corrupted… i.e. it’s probably not the right moment to be worried about the fact that a file cannot be deleted.

So, if o2xygen has any important data that isn’t currently backed up, backing that up to an external drive/cd/whatever as soon as possible would be first priority?

That means my HD is screwed big time…
How the heck did this happen? Never crashed since last formatting which was one year ago,…

EDIT:
I backed up my documents from my C: to another harddrive…
I don’t know, but, Windows are acting as usual. No problems. Maybe thats the only file with CRC… If I format my PC will I have any problems after that?

The CRC error couldn’t be exactly in this file?
Deleting it won’t ‘correct’ the error? I mean, no file, no CRC error. Of course, use the scandisk after to see if the bad cluster stays there…
Am I wrong?

Well, I don’t know what the exact error message is - but I would rather avoid modifying files (actually, anything) if it’s likely that the disk is corrupted. I mean, the bad block may be in the system area of the disk (instead of the file block itself), for example, so trying to write there may result in corruption of more files accross the disk.
Just my opinion… deleting the file seems just too easy to me

is formatting a solution? Because I have backed up everything a wrote down a list of my programs… i wouldn’'t mind reinstalling things

I agree.

No, not that easy from time to time. Sometimes you can format but you can’t delete
