Department of Justice virus in Russian language

Okay, I am using HP ProBook 4530s windows 7 Home Premium on my system. I need to restart it and go to safe mode with command prompt. I have read suggestions to tap f8 key. I tried that but nothing work. At bottom left corner, it says to press esc, once I do that a menu shows that I have options, such as:

F1 system information
F2 system diagnostics
F7 HP sparekey
F9 boot device option
F10 bios setup
F11 HP recovery
F12 network boot

Now, if you are wondering why I need safe mode with command prompt… my system has been infected with departure of justice type of virus in Russian language.

If anyone has some other options to solve handle this virus, let me know.

If able to, attach requested logs >> https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0

No I can’t get that log as I am unable to use any software on affected system. That virus shows following page (in Russian language) and while it is there I can’t access to any file or folder (which are there in background, probably unaffected!)

https://www.bleepstatic.com/swr-guides/d/department-of-justice-ransomware/department-of-justice-ransomware.jpg

Start tapping the F8 key the moment you turn on power and keep tapping until the Advanced Boot options menu appears. If you have done this (from a complete powered down condition) and it still fails, you will have to use a boot-able recovery disk (CD / DVD / USB) to gain access to your system.

Also, in this post (https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0) is a section towards the bottom entitled “If you cannot Boot the computer” which you can follow to get the logs needed (since this is pretty much the same as a non-boot-able system [for now]).

Hello again…

Somehow I managed to halt the virus file and gained time to run system restore from windows.

Thanks

you may still want to upload the logs and let the anti malware guys look at it as i dont think a system restore will get rid of ransomware/scareware that easy and it may come back.

Okay, attached is the log file. I would be very glad if you can help me further in this matter.
Thanks once again for showing your concern.

you need to attach the two diagnostic logs from Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

Two log files from FRST.

FIRST >>>>

Please go to START (Windows Orb) >> Control Panel >> Uninstall a Program or Programs and Features and remove the following (if listed):

Ask Toolbar
Norton Internet Security

To do so, left clicking on the name once and then click Uninstall/Change at the bar above the list window.

Follow the prompts of the uninstaller BUT please read carefully any questions it asks before answering; some uninstallers will try and deceive you into keeping the software.

Download attached fixlist.txt file and save it to the Desktop:

Both files, FRST and fixlist.txt have to be in the same location or the fix will not work!

- Right-click on

icon and select

Run as Administrator to start the tool.
(XP users click run after receipt of Windows Security Warning - Open File).
- Press the Fix button just once and wait.
- If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
- When finished FRST will generate a log on the Desktop, called Fixlog.txt.
Please attach it to your reply.

Thanks, as soon as I get on my system I will run and update.

Done as described… Fixing completed uneventfully.
Fixlog is attached for further consideration.

How is your system running now?

It’s fine. Do you think I need to do anything else now? What about all these software? Shall I keep them on desktop? Or I can move them to some other folder in c? (I prefer my desktop to remain less populated!)

Since the system is running fine, let’s clean the tools off the desktop and get you on your way:

Clean up of Malware Removal Tools
Now that we are through using these tools, let’s clean them off your system so that should you ever need to have malware removed again (we hope not) fresh, updated copies will be downloaded.

  • Download Delfix from here to your desktop and double click it to start the program
    • Ensure Remove disinfection tools is ticked
      Also tick:
    • Activate UAC
    • Create registry backup
    • Purge system restore
    • Reset system settings

http://i1351.photobucket.com/albums/p785/dbreeze2/just%20stuff/DelFixSelectall_zps0f04cec4.png

  • Click Run
    • The program will run for a few moments and then notepad will open with a log. Note: Please save this log first before rebooting your system (if asked to); DelFix does not save the log as it is trying to remove all traces of our work on your system. Please attach the log in your next reply.
You can delete any log files left on your desktop as these are no longer needed.

==Some Tools to consider to help keep your system safe ==

Consider a program that will check for out-of-date programs on your system
Some programs don’t have update checks built in or make you run the application to start the check for updates process. An easier way to stay on top of the current versions of your installed programs is to use a version checking program like Heimdal Free from Heimdal Security (you can get the software from here and read more about it on the same page).

Unchecky is a small service that runs in the background to help keep those “extra toolbars” and tag along search engines from automatically installing. By automatically directing you to a custom install with all the options unchecked, only what you manually choose and confirm gets installed.

CryptoPrevent is a free program that prevents CryptoLocker / ransomware from infecting your PC by locking down the OS so the malware can not get a grip on your system. You can read the details about this program here.

Also, consider keeping MalwareBytes Antimalware in your arsenal of safe keeping programs. Use the free version (not the paid or trial version) and you won’t have a problem with your antivirus scanner program. Keep it updated and run a scan with it once a week.

Lastly, if you use Firefox as your main web browser, consider adding the NoScript and AdBlockPlus add-ons to the browser to block scripting hijacks and remove unwanted ads from the pages you view.

and thanks for suggesting cryptoprevent
Let me know next step.

Unless you need anything else done, you are free to go. Thanks for sticking with us and just make sure your AV is running and do periodic scans. That’s all.

It was my pleasure dear, and I should be one to thank you! I will try to be more vigilant now onwards.

Thanks once again.
